General Summary:

The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for providing a wide range of healthcare services to inmates at the Huron County Corrections Facility under the supervision of the Medical Director. Services Include: working collaboratively with the physician in the treatment of illness and injury. Providing preventive care, providing assistance during physical examination, assisting with medical surveillance, overseeing medication distribution and providing health and medical education.

Education, Licensure, Registration and Experience:

Graduate of an accredited school of Practical Nursing

Successful completion of a pharmacology course

Two to three years of clinical hands on patient care experience in a skilled nursing facility, psychiatric ward, chemical dependency facility or correctional facility.

Current Licensure State of Ohio

Current CPR

Valid Vehicle Insurance

Valid State of Ohio driver's license

Basic EKG course recommended

Draw blood preferred

IV certified preferred

Use and operate a variety of medical and laboratory tools and equipment such as blood presure cuffs, stethoscopes, venipuncture tubes, glucose scan monitor, STD cultures, PAP smears, UA dipsticks and first aid equipment.

General hospital practices and procedures in a corrections environment

Essential Functions:

Triaging illnesses/injuries based on inmate's complaints and face to face assessments and referring to physician as appropriate.

Performing triage and providing direct patient care, including first aid, when applicable.

Preparing for and working in physician clinics.

Obtaining vital signs and conducting health appraisal assessments as applicable.

The LPN may pass oral medications, give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. Administers drugs under the direction of the Medical Director and documenting on MAR.

Implements physician orders in a timely manner and documentation of same. Communicates frequently with applicable Providers.

Acting as a resource person for and providing healthcare education to staff and inmates.

Administering and interpreting TB skin tests to staff and inmates.

Reviewing initial medical screening of inmates, interviewing inmates regarding health history and current status determining medical appropriateness into the jail.

Coordinate medical testing and transfers.

Monitoring and maintaining healthcare supplies and equipment as assigned.

Working cooperatively with security staff, physicians, health administration and other contract healthcare providers.

Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance.

Appearance is professional, neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment. Wears proper photo identification badge while on duty.

Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times, as observed by peers and management.

Attends monthly staff meetings and participates in monthly rounding process with manager to assure effective and timely two-way communications.

Participates in and completes required department specific education and training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job-related hazards.

Follows safety and security policies including exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
