Step into a day on our dock

In Northbrook, you’ll kick off the shift the same way we finish it: with Safety # 1 top of mind. You’ll walk the shipping floor, stage the day’s outbound loads, and make sure every shipment has precisely what it needs to leave our facility on time and on spec.

Your morning often starts at the desk—building and verifying documentation. You’ll prepare packing slips, create Bills of Lading (BOL), and assemble export documents when required. Before anything goes, you’ll conduct a meticulous final inspection of all company paperwork tied to shipping. You’ll match signed BOLs with the matching Sales orders and finalize the BOLs if necessary. When Sales requests certifications, you’ll prepare them accurately and assist the Invoicing Clerk when needed.

Mid-morning might find you on the phone with carriers—giving directions to drivers, confirming pickup windows, and contacting them when items are ready to ship. You’ll lean on freight tables to validate shipping costs and process parcel shipments through our UPS/FedEx computer systems. For export work, you’ll coordinate the required activities and maintain information related to NAFTA, ensuring files are complete and compliant.

On the floor, you’ll keep things moving: organizing the shipping area, staging daily shipments, and matching paperwork to each load. You’ll assist with loading and unloading trucks, help receive inbound freight from the mills, and support the receiving and recording of non-conforming material. You’ll also load and unload turnstiles for the 50” slitter and CTL, and pitch in on packaging “As Is” orders when needed.

Throughout the day, you’re a partner to many: supporting the Sales department on shipping issues and assisting customers with document requests—reprinting, fixing, and emailing paperwork so their operations stay on track. You’ll also help train new team members, sharing best practices on documentation control, carrier communication, and floor flow.

Other ways you’ll make an impact

  • General housekeeping in line with Traffic/Shipping expectations—sweep, pick up, and keep aisles clear.
  • Keep scrap skids organized and deliver to the processor once a truckload is collected.
  • Jump in on other Shipping/Receiving duties as needed.
  • Schedule inbound freight from the mills to balance dock capacity and workflow.

What you bring

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three or more years of related shipping/receiving experience and/or training; or an equivalent blend of education and experience.
  • Preferred hands-on experience using: tape measure, micrometer, calipers, crane, fork lift truck, bander, band cutters, and side loader.
