Litigation Attorney - Defamation & Crisis

(Mid-Level Associate, Federal Clerkship Preferred)

Alexandria, VA (DC Metro Area) | $185K–$235K | Elite Boutique Litigation Firm

A nationally recognized boutique litigation firm is seeking a 2nd–4th year Litigation Associate to join its high‑stakes defamation and complex commercial litigation practice. This team represents Fortune 100 companies, hedge funds, CEOs, journalists, athletes, tech founders, and other high‑profile clients facing reputational attacks and crisis‑level disputes.

This is a rare opportunity to run meaningful cases early, work directly with Chambers‑ranked partners, and take ownership of strategy, writing, and client interaction far earlier than traditional big‑law timelines.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Real case ownership early — staffed by ability, not seniority
  • Marquee matters — Dominion/Fox, Rolling Stone, FINRA‑record judgments, Palin v. NYT
  • Direct partner access — work closely with two Chambers Band 1 partners
  • Elite client base — Fortune 100 companies, hedge funds, CEOs, athletes, tech founders
  • High earning potential — true‑up compensation model rewards production directly
  • Top‑tier litigation experience — defamation taught in‑house; they hire for skill, EQ, and writing

What You'll Do

  • Lead significant defamation and commercial litigation matters with real autonomy
  • Draft strategy memos framing case theory, jury themes, and narrative direction
  • Write demand letters seeking corrections, retractions, and apologies
  • Conduct deposition prep and witness prep for high‑profile clients
  • Engage directly with publishers and broadcasters in pre‑publication counseling
  • Perform legal research (including AI‑accelerated workflows) and targeted document review
  • Interact directly with sophisticated clients and media outlets
  • Collaborate with partners on landmark, high‑visibility litigation

What We're Looking For

  • 2nd–4th year litigation associate (class years ~2020–2022 ideal)
  • Federal clerkship strongly preferred (Court of Appeals ideal)
  • Big‑law litigation pedigree or plaintiff‑side trial experience
  • Strong academic record; top‑of‑class at non‑target schools acceptable

Hard Skills

  • Exceptional legal writing (solo‑authored writing sample expected)
  • Strategic case‑building and thematic narrative development
  • Deposition prep, witness prep, demand letter drafting
  • Ability to drive cases forward with minimal supervision

Soft Skills

  • High EQ; comfortable with sophisticated, high‑pressure client interactions
  • Collaborative team player (not a lone wolf)
  • Thrives in high‑stakes environments
  • Conversational discipline — comfortable with silence and strategic communication

Nice‑to‑Have Backgrounds

  • Journalism or newsroom experience
  • Entertainment, streaming, or crypto industry exposure
  • Plaintiff‑side litigation experience (Boies Schiller, Quinn Emanuel, Susman Godfrey, etc.)

Traits That Are Not a Fit

  • Hour‑averse candidates
  • Lone‑wolf working style
  • Stress‑avoidant or shuts down under pressure
  • Weak transcript without explanation

Compensation & Logistics

  • Salary: $185K–$235K
  • True‑up model: Cravath‑equivalent at ~2,000 hours; higher earnings above that
  • Hours: 1,950 billable minimum
  • Location: Alexandria, VA (DC Metro)
  • Visa: Sponsorship not available
  • Hiring: 2–3 associates
  • Bar: Must be authorized to work in the US and hold bar admission in good standing
