Position Overview

The general role of the Aerial Construction Technician II - Fiber Optics is stringing and maintaining fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair overhead fiber lines. This position requires proficiency with new cable installs, pole transfers, strand building, lashing, make readies, and equipment mounting. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces. This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency. They must be comfortable working in heights and confined spaces for this position.

The Aerial Construction Technician II reports to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location.

What You'll Do

Safely perform work in communication spaces

Qualify to work safely in energized spaces

Participate in work requiring pole climbing

Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set)

Inspect, mobilize, and operate a bucket truck from the cab

Record and report the sequential foot marks by the operator or groundman

Responsible for framing poles

Pull cable, strand, fiber, and lash, for extended periods of time

Provide framing and attachment hardware for operator, jack down guys, pull lasher

Assist with worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections

Provide roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification

Monitor basic gauges to determine tension and pressure on the cable lines

Attend the reel to ensure uniform deployment of strand and fiber optic cable

Monitor basic gauges to determine tension and pressure on the cable lines

Monitor cable during installs for appropriate tension during critical turning points and transitions

Recognize general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards such as missing and or degraded parts and hardware

Identify the location of and direct the navigation of the crew into Energized Spaces

Monitor and maintain min/max truck stock materials

Perform minor field repairs on equipment (i.e., reel trailer, bucket and placer truck, and winder trailer)

Responsible for leading projects or crews

Read and interpret design packages

Responsible for completing time and material (T&M) documentation

Provide guidance in the proper use and wearing of job-specific PPE

Assist with 3rd party optical ground wire (OPGW) installation oversight

Lead and mentor less experienced coworkers

Lead team members and project completions as required

Valid Driver's License is required

Preferably begins training to obtain CDL A/B

Proficient in the use of the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, man lift, cable puller, and reel stands preferred

Experience operating small equipment experience (i.e., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)

Flagger Certification

Must be comfortable working at elevated heights and confined spaces

Ability to climb poles up to 40' using standard safety protocols

Qualify as an Electrically Qualified Communication Lineman

Qualify in rigging (ex. Pole Framing)

Ability to work under minimal supervision

Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck

Ability to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices

Possess an aptitude for leadership in the field

Possess a mechanical aptitude

Show aptitude for 3rd party oversight of optical ground wire (OPGW) installation

Possess verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism

Able to read drawings to determine work placement and specifications

Compute basic math calculations and take measurements

Familiar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Project

Working Conditions

Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel

Climb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spaces

Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions

Able to walk long distances

Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance
