Lighting Maintenance Supervisor - Northampton

Living Places

Operational Specialists

Northampton

Permanent

About the role

As a Lighting Maintenance Supervisor, you will play a key leadership role in managing and delivering high-quality street lighting services across Northamptonshire County. This is a mixed office and site-based role in a street lighting depot in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Reporting to the Street Lighting Manager, you will oversee a team of technicians and operatives, ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant maintenance, installation, and repair of street lighting assets.

This is a hands-on supervisory position that combines technical expertise in public lighting systems with strong people management and operational oversight. You will help deliver a reliable, energy-efficient street lighting service that supports public safety, reduces energy consumption, and meets the authority's performance standards and regulatory requirements.

The role involves significant outdoor work, coordination with contractors and stakeholders, and a strong focus on health and safety, quality, and continuous improvement in a dynamic public works environment.

What you'll be doing

As a Lighting Maintenance Supervisor you''ll:

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of street lighting technicians and operatives, including allocating daily workloads, monitoring performance, and providing on-the-job training and development.
  • Oversee planned and reactive maintenance, installation, and repair of street lighting columns, lanterns, LED upgrades, cabling, control systems, and associated assets.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including scheduling works, resource allocation, and ensuring jobs are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality and safety standards.
  • Carry out site inspections, quality checks, and audits to verify compliance with specifications, British/European standards, and the authority's policies.
  • Ensure full adherence to health and safety regulations, including risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work; promote a strong safety culture within the team.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (e.g., highways, asset management), external contractors, utility companies, and stakeholders to deliver works efficiently and minimise disruption.
  • Monitor and report on team performance, key performance indicators (KPIs), inventory/material usage, and any issues affecting service delivery.
  • Support the Street Lighting Manager with budget control, procurement of materials, fault investigation, and the implementation of improvement initiatives (such as energy efficiency or smart lighting projects).
  • Respond to emergencies and out-of-hours call-outs as required, ensuring rapid resolution of lighting faults that impact public safety.
  • Maintain accurate records, including works orders, inspections, and compliance documentation using relevant systems.

Who we're looking for

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and safety-focused supervisor with a strong background in street lighting or electrical public works.

Essential requirements:

  • Proven experience supervising teams in street lighting, highways electrical works, or a similar electrical maintenance environment.
  • Solid technical knowledge of street lighting systems, including LED technology, columns, cabling, control gear, and fault-finding.
  • A relevant electrical qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation, Street Lighting, or equivalent) and current registration with a recognised scheme (such as JIB or ECS card).
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation, particularly in electrical and highway works (e.g., NRSWA, CDM regulations).
  • Full UK driving licence (preferably with van/accessory categories).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills, with the ability to motivate a team and manage multiple priorities.
  • Good IT skills, including the use of works management systems, Microsoft Office, and basic reporting tools.

Desirable attributes:

  • Experience with street lighting asset management systems or inventory control.
  • Knowledge of energy-efficient lighting solutions and smart lighting technology.
  • Previous experience working in a local authority or public sector highways environment.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.

If you are a proactive leader who takes pride in delivering reliable public services and enjoys a mix of hands-on technical work and team management, we'd love to hear from you.

  • 25 days paid annual leave (pro rata)
  • Family friendly policies which include 28 weeks full pay for maternity/adoption leave and four weeks full pay for paternity/partners leave
