About the City of Portland Parks Recreation and Facilities Department

The Portland Parks Recreation and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs, including Before and After School Swim Lessons and Senior Adult programs, and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40 miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.

Job Summary

The City of Portland Aquatics Division is offering a unique opportunity to make a difference in the Portland community as a Seasonal Lifeguard. Do you love to swim? Make a splash and get paid as a lifeguard! Lifeguarding is a fun and serious job. Youll gain rewarding and beneficial experience, plus every day brings new adventures. Build self-confidence and a sense of responsibility, and impart basic work skills, such as ongoing in-service training to practice rescue skills and working with colleagues as a team. Flexible work schedule to include early morning, afternoon, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Looking for candidates who are committed to working with both patrons and colleagues to promote a safe environment within our aquatics facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Exceptional ability to enforce rules and maintain safety of all guests. Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of all guests and staff in and around City of Portland pools.

Required Skills & Experience

Must hold current American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/First Aid Certification and must attach copies of certifications to your application. If you are not certified but interested in becoming a lifeguard, please contact us at aquaticsportlandmaine.gov for more information about upcoming classes.

Applicants must be at least 15 years old. Any applicants at the age of 15 years old is required to have a work permit.

Prior experience working as a lifeguard preferred.

Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.

Expected Hours

Schedule: Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check. Salary: Seasonal Lifeguard positions starting pay rate $19/hour.
