Job Duties LPNs provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

• Screens for sick call • Administers medications • Provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed • Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan • Records all pertinent information into the medical record • Interacts with other departments as needed • Promotes continued competence through education, certification, with a focus on correctional nursing

Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days, and locations as assigned, along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 - April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

This position is currently approved for a temporary enhanced hourly rate due to critical staffing needs at designated facilities. The enhanced rate will remain in effect only while the facility is experiencing critical staffing shortages.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing LPN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed The NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers orders in applying treatments Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a Corrections or Law Enforcement environment Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
