The City of Chesapeake is seeking a compassionate and skilled Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for a part-time, seasonal substitute position within Chesapeake Juvenile Services. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct nursing care to juvenile residents in a secure facility, ensuring safe, timely, and compliant healthcare delivery in accordance with clinical standards and the Virginia Board of Nursing.

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Medical Doctor and supports daily healthcare operations by providing coverage during assigned shifts and staffing needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and process sick call requests from housing units as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Perform triage and nursing assessments to determine appropriate level of care.
  • Administer medications and treatments per physician orders and facility protocols.
  • Document all care provided, including Medication Administration Records (MARs) and nursing notes.
  • Monitor residents during medication administration and report adverse reactions or changes in condition to supervising RN.
  • Respond to medical emergencies within the scope of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and established protocols.
  • Interpret and reinforce physician instructions and treatment plans for residents.
  • Maintain medication and medical supply inventory, ensuring proper storage and adequate stock levels.
  • Conduct chart audits and ensure timely restocking of medical documentation forms.
  • Collaborate with RNs, physicians, and multidisciplinary staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Deliver consistent, patient-centered care as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in a secure juvenile healthcare setting.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires a diploma in practical nursing.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Requires licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Commonwealth of Virginia or a reciprocal state (according to the Nurse Licensure Compact as prescribed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing).
  • Requires certification in CPR, Multi-media First Aid, and Handle With Care.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant experience in delivering clinical care within secure environments, ambulatory care settings, or public health, particularly involving pediatric and adolescent patients preffered.
