Merrill Area Public Schools is seeking an innovative Library Technology Specialist. The Library Technology Specialist serves as the instructional leader of the school library media program while supporting the effective integration of technology into teaching and learning. The position is responsible for providing equitable access to information, fostering a culture of literacy and lifelong learning, teaching information and digital literacy skills, managing library resources and services, and collaborating with educators to enhance student achievement.

The Library Technology Specialist partners with teachers and administrators to design engaging learning experiences that integrate information literacy, digital citizenship, technology tools, and research-based instructional practices. The position supports students and staff in accessing, evaluating, creating, and communicating information effectively while ensuring the library serves as a welcoming, inclusive, and innovative learning environment for all learners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Library Media Program Leadership

  • Oversees the operation and continuous improvement of the school library media program.
  • Maintains an organized, welcoming, and student-centered library environment that promotes literacy, inquiry, creativity, and lifelong learning.
  • Develops, evaluates, and maintains a diverse, current, and inclusive collection of print, digital, and multimedia resources aligned with curriculum and student interests.
  • Manages library circulation, cataloging, processing, inventory, and resource maintenance using Destiny and other library management systems.
  • Advocates for the library media program by communicating its impact on student literacy and achievement to administrators, staff, families, and the school community.
  • Administers and monitors Common School Fund resources and budget allocations in accordance with district and state guidelines.
  • Promotes reading engagement through book talks, displays, literacy events, author studies, reading initiatives, and other library programming.
  • Collaborates with students, staff, families, and community partners to support literacy and learning initiatives.

Information Literacy and Instruction

  • Provides direct instruction to students in information literacy, media literacy, digital citizenship, research skills, and ethical use of information.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to design, implement, and assess learning experiences that integrate information literacy standards and curricular goals.
  • Supports students in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and communicating information from a variety of sources.
  • Assists students and staff in accessing and utilizing print, digital, and online resources effectively.
  • Assesses student growth in information literacy, media literacy, and technology literacy skills.

Technology Integration and Coaching

  • Serves as a resource and instructional coach for staff in the effective integration of technology into teaching and learning.
  • Collaborates with teachers to design, co-teach, model, and evaluate technology-rich learning experiences that increase student engagement and achievement.
  • Supports implementation of district instructional technology initiatives and digital learning goals.
  • Provides professional learning opportunities and ongoing support for instructional technology tools, applications, and resources.
  • Maintains current knowledge of emerging technologies, instructional practices, library science, and coaching strategies.
  • Develops and maintains training materials and resources to support staff learning.

Resource and Systems Management

  • Educates staff and students regarding district-approved digital resources, instructional software, databases, and library media resources.
  • Manages eBook collections, digital content subscriptions, and online research resources.
  • Collaborates with Technology Department staff regarding technology implementation, resource deployment, troubleshooting, and compatibility needs.
  • Assists with the evaluation, selection, and implementation of instructional technology resources and library materials.
  • Maintains accurate records related to library resources, technology resources, inventory, circulation, and Common School Fund expenditures.
  • Supports district learning management systems and digital learning platforms.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Technology Department by submitting help desk tickets and coordinating building-level technology support needs, ensuring focus remains on instructional technology integration.
  • Assists with district and building-level initiatives related to information literacy, digital learning, and technology planning.

Other Duties

  • Participates in district committees, curriculum work, professional learning activities, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of district information and technology literacy goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and/or Building Principal.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exceptional fine motor skills required for repairing damaged books (mending, taping) and performing "first-fix" technical repairs on electronic devices, such as replacing keys on Chromebooks or clearing jams in high-volume printers.
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes of books or equipment weighing up to 35 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally. Must be able to push/pull loaded book and media carts weighing up to 100 lbs. through hallways and over various floor surfaces.
  • Frequent need to stoop, kneel, and crouch to access bottom shelves or reach cable connections under desks. Must be able to reach horizontally and overhead to shelve materials up to 6 feet high.
  • High level of sustained visual acuity to read barcodes, spine labels (fine print), and computer diagnostic screens. Must have the auditory ability to troubleshoot hardware issues (detecting fan noise or drive failure) and monitor student activity in a large space.
  • Capacity for prolonged periods of both standing (at circulation desks) and sitting (at workstations for cataloging and data entry).
  • Ability to safely use step stools or short ladders to access high shelves, replace projector bulbs, or manage ceiling-mounted AV equipment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor''s Degree required; Master''s Degree in Library and Information Science, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin DPI Teaching License required.
  • Library Media Specialist, Educational Technology, Instructional Coaching, or Educational Leadership certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information literacy, digital citizenship, library management systems, instructional technology integration, and effective instructional practices.
  • Experience collaborating with teachers to improve student learning through literacy, inquiry, and technology integration is preferred.
