POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Library Division of the Community Services Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science or Computer Technology, or
  • High School Diploma or GED plus two (2) years of specialized training and/or progressive experience in a library setting in the areas of research, readers advisory, cataloging, collection development, or any other pertinent computer/technical-related services experience;
  • Successfully obtain a New Mexico Notary Commission within six (6) months of hire date;
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of employment, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Desired:

  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties

  • Responsible for the development of special library collections in assigned subject areas;
  • Assists the Library Cataloger in copy-cataloging special library collection materials in formats including books, DVDs, periodicals and audiobooks; in editing MARC (machine-readable cataloging) bibliographic records; and in assigning public library specific call numbers and subject headings for specific materials;
  • Processes withdrawals of materials through analytical report generation and skilled decision making;
  • Curates streaming video selections for weekly documentary/movie offerings for patrons relative to special dated events and observances;
  • Creates digital assets to promote the library's events, collections and databases for social media and outside advertising purposes;
  • Researches requested materials for Inter-Library Loans (ILL) through computer databases and other sources and provides primary coverage for this entire process of accessing, delivering, reporting all ILL materials and coordinating correspondence and other communications for the process;
  • Assists library patrons via telephone, email, or in person, including locating materials, answering reference questions, and researching topics;
  • Assists library patrons in the use of the public computers, related software and internet utilization, mobile printing, document scanning, and other various devices and equipment;
  • Arranges, coordinates, and conducts computer classes for the public;
  • Conducts effective reference interviews;
  • Proctors exams for students taking correspondence or online classes;
  • Assists the Reference Librarian with adult programming, book displays, and preparation of bibliographies;
  • Performs annual electronic inventory of all library materials for shrinkage and security analyses;
  • Updates and maintains State, County, Municipal, and Public Review documents and statutes;
  • Prepares reports and statistical information as required;
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends, policies, and practices by reading industry-related materials;
  • Attends staff and professional meetings, training sessions, and workshops; may prepare library statistical reports;
  • Develops and maintains local history and specialized collection files;
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the library on assigned days;
  • Assists other staff members, as assigned; may accept fees and fines if/when covering the circulation desk;
  • With proper licensing, performs notary services to the public;
  • Safely operates a City vehicle;
  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES

  • Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);
  • May be required to work variable shifts including days, evenings, and weekends;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
