Library Media Specialist

Primary Purpose:
Supervise and manage the day to day operations of the school library/media center, including but not limited to collection development, selection and de-selection of materials, and management of circulation. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser and assist teachers in the use and integration of current and emerging technologies into the curriculum. Provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the campus library media program is an integral component of the learning/instructional program and aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the campus and the school district.
Qualifications: Education/Certification:
- Valid Texas school librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of library science
- Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of Information Literacy and technology skills and the methods needed to integrate them into the curriculum
- Such alternatives to the above as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable
Experience: Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instruction
- Create a learning environment which supports the mission and goals of the school and promotes the development of skills and attitudes that prepare students for lifelong learning in an information rich society.
- Evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning and creates a learning environment which incorporates collaborative planning and collaborative teaching by the library media specialist and teachers and integrates information literacy and technology instruction into the curriculum.
- Create a learning environment which accommodates all students and their need to read, view, listen, and communicate individually and collaboratively, using traditional and technological resources for ideas, information, and personal development.
Library Programs
- Provide a balanced collection of print, non-print, and electronic resources that support the curriculum and state standards, reflect an appreciation of diversity, recognizes different learning styles, promotes independent reading and learning and technology for accessing and producing information.
- Work collaboratively with the Campus Technician to introduce, provide training, and support integration of technology tools.
- Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources.
- Provide flexible access to classes and individual students, and create an environment that is conducive to learning.
Student Management
- Carry out discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.
- Assist individual students and groups in accessing, evaluating, and using information for curricular and personal needs.
Administration
- Manage the financial, physical, and human resources of the library media center efficiently and effectively.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and Board Policy in the library/media services area.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library/media center program and make changes based on the findings.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Performs other duties as the superintendent or superintendent's designee may assign.
Communication
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Perform other such duties the Superintendent may assign.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise paraprofessionals, student assistants, and volunteers if applicable
