The Library Clerk supports the library's mission by providing frontline customer service at the circulation desk, assisting patrons with access to materials, accounts, and library resources. The role maintains an organized and accessible collection through shelving and stack management while contributing to library programs and community engagement efforts. It ensures a welcoming environment for all users and performs related duties that enhance daily library operations and patron experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Provides frontline customer service at the circulation desk, assisting patrons with inquiries, accounts, equipment use, room reservations, and access to library materials while ensuring adherence to library policies and procedures.
- Maintains accurate circulation operations by registering patrons, managing account updates, processing check-ins and check-outs, collecting fees, handling holds and renewals, and ensuring materials are properly inspected and routed.
- Supports the organization and accessibility of the library's physical collection by shelving materials, maintaining stack and reading room areas, monitoring shelf accuracy, shifting items, preparing new materials, and responding to security alarms.
- Assists with library programs and special events by helping prepare materials and spaces, promoting offerings, supporting activities, distributing incentives, and contributing to routine outreach and social media tasks.
- Performs a variety of operational and administrative duties, including processing assigned materials, searching for missing or overdue items, completing opening and closing procedures, training volunteers, proofreading written materials, and participating in staff meetings and trainings.
- Contributes to a safe and secure environment for all customers and staff, especially during evening and weekend hours.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of clerical or customer service experience.
- Depending on area of assignment, a valid Texas Driver's License may be required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of library policies, documentation, and standard written communication formats to read, comprehend, prepare, and proofread a variety of materials.
- Skill in verbal and written communication, with the ability to maintain positive working relationships with City staff, external agencies, vendors, volunteers, patrons, and the general public.
- Ability to work effectively under general supervision, using sound judgment and professionalism in daily responsibilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires lifting up to 45 pounds occasionally. Subject to vision constantly; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, hearing and talking frequently; sitting, pushing/pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, climbing and balancing occasionally; crouching rarely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions involves occasional exposure to infectious diseases and irate members of the public.
