Description

The City of Norfolks Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Assistant II for its Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library team. The Library Assistant II PT position assists with general library duties such as performing circulation activities of checking in and out materials, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans. Provides customer service with assisting with computer and printing. Performing general reference duties of searching of databases and other resources to retrieve information and recommend reading materials. The Library Assistant II will assist with library programming.

Department Hiring Salary: $21 hourly

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Front line customer service at the public circulation desk; assisting patrons with library inquiries concerning library and community services
  • Understands verbal and written instructions and uses effective communication skills with coworkers and library patrons.
  • Assists patrons with all library resources and technology.
  • Provides resource retrieval and reader's advisory services to library users.
  • Assists with programs and events in the library and may be called upon for outreach efforts.
  • Performs circulation duties of checking materials in and out, reserving materials requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans, collecting fines or fees, responding to correspondence.
  • Performs administrative duties by preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, distributing library materials.
  • Assists with library displays and handouts.
  • Performs other assigned duties as required and requested by supervisors.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

One year of experience in library or related customer service work.

Demonstrated level of competency with regard to computer use is required.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Hours: 20 hours work week; varied, to include evening, weekends, and rotating schedules.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
