Duties & Responsibilities Mission or Goal of Unit Pursue the clinical research and education missions of the VCUs academic medical center in the specialties of Hematology Oncology and Palliative Care. Through bench research, clinical trials, and the rigorous study of prevention control, our scientists pursue the many roles of medicine in treating, preventing, and managing the adverse events of cancer through the continuum of care. Our hallmark activity is translational research, where our physicians and scientists work to bring laboratory discoveries to the patient as quickly and safely as possible. Through our training programs, our faculty train the next generation of physicians and scientists to further advance practice and science.

 

Chief Purpose of this Position

The VCU School of Medicine Division of Hematology Oncology and Palliative Care and Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center are seeking a Clinical & Translational Investigator with a focus in Hematologic Malignancies to practice at our flagship and satellite locations.

This position will be responsible for bringing the most innovative clinical trials in Hematologic Malignancies to the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and the VCU region utilizing intra and extramural partnerships. Ability to collaborate with Basic Science Investigators will be key in developing a translational research program. This position will be expected to establish extramural partnerships and pursue the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Centers goal of offering our patients early access to the most innovative drugs in hematologic malignancies before they become the future standard of care.

 

Teaching Trains medical students, residents, and fellows in the lab and while in the clinic. Expected to actively participate in providing clinical research opportunities to fellows.

 

Research This position will be responsible for bringing the most innovative clinical trials in hematologic malignancies to the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and the region utilizing intra and extramural partnerships. This position will be expected to establish extramural partnerships with the ultimate goal of offering the most innovative drugs in hematologic malignancies to patients at the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center before they are standard of care. This position will be expected to develop, initiate, and manage investigator-initiated trials in collaboration with the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Centers laboratory investigators. You will be expected to participate in Masseys Clinical Trial Training Program, write 2 IITs by year 3 and year 4, and apply for a career development award by year 4. Efforts to obtain funding for your research in areas of focus consistent with the mission of the School of Medicine Department and Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center must be demonstrated. In addition, reasonable scholarly activities such as publications, presentations at national meetings, and participation in appropriate academic organizations are expected, as well as active participation as a scientific member of the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.

 

Service It is expected that the person in this position will be active in decreasing Health Disparities in the community served by Massey. VCU Clinical Attends on the inpatient wards and consult service, and/or sees patients in the outpatient clinic with a focus on hematologic malignancies.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board certified or eligible in medical oncology or hematology
  • Eligible for Virginia licensure
  • Evidence of accomplishment (potential e.g. - publications, trial PI during medical school, residency, fellowship, and/or early academic career)
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty at VCU
