Description

Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC), a comprehensive institution nestled in a picturesque rural setting, invites applications for the position of Learning Commons Tutoring Specialist for Writing. We are looking for a dedicated writing expert who is passionate about student success. In this role you will be a vital academic partner, assisting students with personalized tutoring and collaborative problem-solving to equip students with the tools to become self-sufficient writers and confident editors of their own work.

Located in rural northwestern Illinois along the scenic Rock River, SVCC is situated between the cities of Dixon and Sterling, placing it just one hour from Rockford and the Quad Cities, and two hours west of Chicago.

Examples of Duties

  • Tutor students in writing subject areas in person and online.

  • Assist students in the development of study skills and learning strategies.

  • At the discretion of tutoring and/or disability support supervisors, provide individual academic support to students with disabilities.

  • Provide training and support for students using equipment, including the use of software and equipment aids for students with disabilities.

  • Identify and refer students to appropriate instructional and supplementary materials.

  • Contribute to maintaining current, accurate student tutoring tracking records.

  • Maintain and act as a custodian of tutoring supplies and equipment.

  • Supervise Learning Commons Tutoring and student tutors in the absence of the supervisor.

  • Contribute to and attend annual tutor training, supervision sessions, tutor meetings, and annual evaluation sessions with the supervisor as requested.

  • Under the direction of the tutoring coordinator:

  • Lead or assist with tours of the Learning Commons.

  • Lead or assist with visits to classrooms to explain the services of the Learning Commons.

  • Conduct or assist with review sessions.

  • Assist with developing and maintaining instructional and supplementary materials.

  • Assist with data and reporting.

  • Assume all other reasonable duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in an appropriate field and two years of experience which provides relevant knowledge and skills required.

Must have education and experience in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and students required.

It is preferred that the tutor have experience in the course being tutored or a similar course; and/or experience in teaching similar curriculum.

Must have the ability to quickly establish and maintain a good working relationship and rapport with staff and students.

  • Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  • Must be comfortable working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Must have strong skills in customer service and possess excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Must be able to work with Microsoft Office and Google products, including virtual conferencing and meeting tools.
  • Must be able to provide oral and written responses to student questions, and assist faculty given general guidance.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively by phone and email on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings.

Personal Interaction

Frequent contact is made with all levels of College personnel, students, faculty, the general public, and outside organizations in relation to specific departmental duties and services.

Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision is exercised over tutors and the Learning Commons in the absence of the supervisor.
