About this position:iWorks is seeking a Lead Systems Architect to support the Decennial Transformation and Application Modernization (DTAM) project for the U.S. Census Bureau. This effort is focused on modernizing Decennial Census systems into a secure, scalable, cloud-smart environment supporting the 2030 Census and the American Community Survey.

The Lead Systems Architect will provide technical and management leadership across major system and technology initiatives, helping drive modernization efforts involving cloud-native platforms, DevSecOps, data-centric architectures, and scalable application modernization strategies. This role will support the development and governance of enterprise architecture standards while overseeing application modernization, testing, operations, security integration, and cloud migration activities.

*This position is contingent upon contract award.

Salary Range: - $140K – $185K commensurate with the candidate's skills, experience, location, and qualifications.

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  1. Provide technical and management leadership for major system and technology initiatives
  2. Establish project goals, technical strategies, and execution plans aligned with DTAM objectives
  3. Direct and oversee task execution to ensure technical requirements and delivery objectives are achieved
  4. Lead application architecture, modernization, development, and operational management activities
  5. Establish, document, and maintain architecture standards, governance artifacts, and technical frameworks
  6. Oversee application testing, security integration, operations, maintenance, and cloud migration activities
  7. Support implementation of DevSecOps practices and scalable agile methodologies
  8. Guide cloud-native, API-based, microservices, and containerized architecture strategies
  9. Collaborate with technical teams, stakeholders, and leadership across multiple project assignments
  10. Evaluate technical performance and recommend improvements impacting project growth and modernization efforts

 

Required Education/Qualifications:

  • 10–14 years of relevant systems architecture, enterprise architecture, or large-scale application modernization experience
  • Experience leading major technology assignments and serving as a technical expert across multiple initiatives
  • Strong knowledge of application architecture and design oversight principles
  • Experience with DevSecOps integration, automated testing, and security-focused development practices
  • Experience planning and executing cloud and multi-cloud migration activities
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems
  • Hands-on experience with microservices, API-based, serverless, and containerized architectures
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust Architecture concepts and enterprise security integration
  • Experience supporting cloud-native platforms and enterprise modernization initiatives
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:

  • Certifications:
    • TOGAF certification
    • Cloud Architecture certification (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)
    • CISSP certification
    • Big data certification from AWS, Google, or Azure
    • Cloud database certification
    • Data analytics certification
  • Experience supporting federal government modernization initiatives
  • Experience working within Agile and scaled Agile environments
