This position works collaboratively with the Program Manager/Learning Specialist to provide individualized academic support, learning resources, and student success interventions that help students develop effective strategies for success within the Foster School of Medicine curriculum. The Lead Student Success Specialist helps to support specialized retention initiatives and student success programs through the use of early alert systems, institutional and school-level data, and coordinated intervention strategies designed to promote student achievement and academic progression. This role works directly with cohorts of students to provide holistic student success support through academic development planning, resource referrals, individualized guidance, and academic and career goal setting. This position collaborates closely with the Program Manager/Learning Specialist (and peer tutors), faculty, course directors, college mentors, and student affairs leadership to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment while maintaining compliance with LCME standards, including LCME Element 11.1, which requires academic advising and counseling to be provided by individuals who do not participate in student assessment or promotion decisions.45323BRTranscriptUp to 25%
- Support student success, retention, and persistence initiatives designed to promote academic achievement, timely progression, and graduation outcomes, informed by national benchmarks including AAMC GQ data and LCME expectations.
- Provide individualized academic advising and counseling and holistic student support to assist students in developing effective learning strategies, study skills, time management practices, academic resilience, and professional goal setting.
- Utilize early alert systems, student performance indicators, school-level data, and relevant national benchmark data to identify students who may benefit from additional support and assist in coordinating proactive intervention strategies.
- Collaborate with the Program Manager/Learning Specialist to co-develop, coordinate, and facilitate workshops, educational programming, and academic success resources aligned with student needs, AAMC GQ findings, board preparation, transition points, and LCME standards.
- Work closely with the Program Manager/Learning Specialist, course directors, college mentors, faculty, and student affairs leadership to support academic progress, coordinate intervention efforts, and strengthen student success systems while maintaining a non-evaluative role consistent with LCME Element 11.1.
- Participate in College Check-In Meetings and other student support initiatives to promote communication, student engagement, academic success, and coordinated follow-up for students requiring additional support.
- Support the coordination and administration of peer tutoring and academic support services, including recruitment, training, scheduling, utilization tracking, program assessment, and reporting aligned with continuous quality improvement efforts.
- Assist students in developing individualized academic development plans and connecting with institutional resources to address academic, personal, or professional barriers to success.
- Assist with retention-focused projects, assessment initiatives, reports, and action plans that use institutional outcomes, AAMC GQ data, and LCME standards to improve student support services.
- Provide operational and programmatic support to the Program Manager/Learning Specialist and other student support personnel to ensure coordinated delivery of academic tutoring, and student success services.
- Maintain current knowledge of best practices in student success, medical education, learning science, academic support, retention strategies, AAMC resources, GQ benchmarking, and LCME accreditation expectations.
- Remains current with all licensure, certifications and mandatory compliances and trainings required of this position.
- Adhere to all policies, procedures and practices (Regents Rules, TTUS, HSECEP OPs, etc.).
