Job Summary

The Student Success Ambassador (SSA) position is designed to provide SLCC students work opportunity in STEM Learning under the direction of Student Success Managers (SSMs). Students will assist SSMs providing personalized guidance, peer mentoring and support for identified STEM students. The Ambassadors will help oversee class visits, help students become aware of STEM Center and Campus resources available to them, be involved with events, assist in outreach, and work closely with SSMs to advance student retention and success with identified students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To be effective, an individual must be able to perform each job duty successfully.

  • Oversee and organize class visits with other ambassadors. Make STEM classroom visits, detailing announcement, promoting events, and encourage student engagement with STEM Learning services.
  • Provide support and mentoring to other Ambassadors.
  • Provide support as needed at the STEM Center front desk.
  • Initiate and provide positive, individualized contact with students in a timely manner, demonstrating the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Support and guide STEM students how to navigate MySuccess, Canvas platforms, and how to access tutoring and other resources (e.g., how to schedule appointments, how to navigate My Success Network, navigate campus resources) coordinated by the SSMs.
  • Assist in the planning, coordinating, promoting, and executing events and programs hosted by the Student Success Manager, STEM Learning, and the School of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering.
  • Assist in outreach and follow up with the SSM's student population groups.
  • Engage students who visit STEM Learning to answer questions and concerns and promote additional STEM Learning resources.
  • Perform clerical functions such as data entry, spreadsheets and other functions as assigned.
  • Lead ambassador team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal/human relations to communicate effectively, build rapport, and project a positive attitude with diverse populations and cultural backgrounds in STEM.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Interpersonal problem-solving skills to make appropriate referrals to the SLCC Student Code, Campus Resources, and provide mentoring support.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer operating systems and SLCC's computer systems (Banner, DegreeWorks).
  • Work collaboratively with other office staff, a variety of campus departments and community personnel.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Language Skills: Must have the ability to read, understand and carry out instructions in written and oral form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Minimum qualifications

  • Maintain cumulative GPA and semester GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Currently enrolled at SLCC with a minimum of 9 credits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Able to present in front of audiences of varying sizes.
  • Professional in manner and appearance.
  • Bilingual.
  • STEM Student, declared in a Science, Mathematics, or Engineering (SME) program.
