Automation Engineers in our Electric Grid Infrastructure Services business unit design SCADA systems to meet operational requirements for Smart Grid, Substation & Distribution Automation, Battery Energy Storage, and Microgrid applications. This role includes hybrid work with three days in the office and up to two days remote, opportunities for relocation, and travel up to 30%.ResponsibilitiesEngage in fast‑paced client projects to plan, engineer, and design SCADA and communications systems.Develop communication block diagrams, panel layout, bill of material drawings, SCADA AC & DC schematics, fiber detail drawings, and network drawings.Provide design input and reviews of P&C drawings and generate points lists for data transfer between RTUs, IEDs, and master stations.Configure Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) such as SEL RTAC, Novatech OrionLX, SMP Gateway, GE‑D20, and programmable automation controllers (PACs).Program Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications (e.g., SEL Diagram Builder, Inkscape, Wonderware).Coordinate with relay‑settings engineers to develop and review communication port settings for protection relays, meters, and other IEDs.Configure network devices—switches, routers, firewalls—with Cisco, Siemens Ruggedcomm, SEL, etc.Perform troubleshooting of SCADA network and communication systems (DNP, Modbus, SEL Protocol, IEC 61850, TCP/IP, UDP) remotely and onsite.Document SCADA system and network designs for projects.Develop automation tools (e.g., Python) to improve project efficiency.Stage, configure, and test integrated system designs for interoperability and performance in our Protection, Automation & Telecommunication Laboratory.Ensure strict adherence to NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards.Guide other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure complete and timely design.Participate in peer‑learning and mentoring to develop less experienced engineers.Potential travel to client and vendor offices as required.QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications, or Computer Systems Engineering.Minimum eight years of experience in design, configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting of substation SCADA and communication systems.Hands‑on experience with SEL, Novatech, and GE RTUs and associated software.Basic understanding of LAN/WAN devices and topology.Knowledge of DNP, Modbus, SEL, IEC‑61850 (MMS/Goose) protocols—both serial and IP based.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% of the time.We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.Valued but Not RequiredProfessional Engineering (P.E.) license.Master's degree in a related engineering field.Experience with communication troubleshooting software/hardware (e.g., ASE Test Set, Wireshark).Protective relay settings experience (SEL, GE, ABB).Radio communications experience.Network design credentials and knowledge of IP/MPLS.Proficiency with MS Project & Visio.Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.Familiarity with NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards & Cyber‑Security.CISSP certification.Leadership & AI FocusLead teams to use data and modern tools—including automation and AI—to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost‑effective designs.Direct automation and process‑improvement initiatives, overseeing engineers who script (Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) for engineering tasks.Encourage learning in fields such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Software Engineering to support AI‑enabled engineering workflows.BenefitsHealth plans: Medical, Dental, VisionLife & accident insurance, disability coverage, Employee Assistance Program (EAP)Back‑up daycare, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA & HSA)401(k) plan with company matchPre‑tax commuter account, Merit scholarship program, Employee discount programCorporate charitable giving program, tuition assistance, first professional licensure bonusEmployee referral bonus, paid annual personal/sick time (PST), paid vacation, paid holidays, paid parental & bereavement leaveFlexible work arrangementsCompensation$118,023 – $180,313Equal OpportunitySargent & Lundy is an equal opportunity employer.
