The Lead Mechanic oversees the maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of vehicles. They act as senior technicians who delegate tasks, train junior staff, and ensure all work meets safety and quality standards. Additionally, they manage shop workflow, order parts, and maintain repair logs.
Job Description
CORE SCOPE OF POSITION
- Troubleshooting complex mechanical or electrical defects and performing major repairs on gasoline, diesel, or specialized equipment.
- Assigning daily duties, mentoring mechanics, and ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed.
- Ordering necessary tools and parts, soliciting price quotes, and maintaining accurate service records.
- Responsible for ensuring the regular preventative maintenance and major repairs of fleet vehicles to ensure the equipment operates safely and properly.
- Keeps equipment available for use by inspecting and testing vehicles; completing preventive maintenance such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing and replacing filters.
- Maintains vehicle functional condition by listening to operator complaints; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions; replacing parts and components; repairing minor body damage and minor painting.
- Verifies vehicle serviceability by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
- Comply with state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
- Maintains vehicle records by recording service and repairs.
- Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; and calling for repairs.
- Controls costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options.
- Ensures that a clean, safe, hazard-free work environment is maintained.
- Adheres to all company and department policies, procedures, and standard operating guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION
- Does provide supervision to other team members, under direction of the Mechanic Supervisor.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
- High school diploma, vocational training or the equivalent experience.
- Must have a valid California Driver's license (Class B license preferred).
- ASE Certification preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- 5+ years of related experience and/or training.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements.
- Knowledge and proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions.
- Ability to work in a professional high-pressure environment while demonstrating and maintaining good personal relation/people skills and a positive attitude.
- Ability to multitask and work well under stress.
- Must be a self-starter and able to adjust to change.
- Must be able to work flexible hours during the day or evening including weekends, holidays, and all blackout dates.
