Lead Land Technician

Location: San Francisco, CA

Onsite Flexibility: Hybrid works from home office with regular reporting to Concord, CA and possible field support

  • Pay Rate: $42.00 $55.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: Monday Friday, 8 hours/day; regular start time must be 8:30 AM or earlier

Job Summary

The Lead Land Technician works under the supervision of an exempt supervisor or the direction of a higher land classification within the Land Technician line of progression or Land Surveyor's line of progression. This role supports gas and electric transmission by measuring and mapping existing infrastructure and pairing that work with record boundary information, as well as writing legal documents to support engineers. The position is hybrid, operating from the contractor's home office with reporting into Concord, CA on occasion and possible field support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine work as a member of a survey party; make precise survey measurements using conventional and state-of-the-art surveying instruments; interpret legal descriptions of real property; make and interpret survey calculations; research, analyze, check, and adjust survey data; research title and compile evidence and documentation for boundary determination; may be required to operate the survey vehicle.
  • Prepare maps from field notes, office data, and title searches for condemnation proceedings, obtaining rights-of-way, purchasing land, obtaining government permits, and obtaining leases and other land documents; plot plan profiles, road cross-sections, topography, contours, and special drawings; may be required to check mathematical computations of others.
  • Assemble information for, and process, clear, and correct rights-of-way and land matters, including preparing legal descriptions of real property; preparing all documents necessary for the acquisition and disposition of fee property and easements, including complicated and non-standard documents under the guidance of a Senior or Principal Land Agent; processing necessary forms for the procuring of permits; preparing and processing quitclaims; securing signatures; securing permits; inspecting property; preliminarily investigating encroachments; and preparing clear and concise reports and correspondence.
  • Act as the lead person in performing the field work necessary to procure data for the preparation of right-of-way papers, permits, leases and other land documents as required for distribution facilities, including coordinating the work of survey parties, conducting field survey work by running a survey party, operating survey equipment, taking field notes, and directing the work of other members of the survey party.
  • May perform the work of lower classifications.

Required Skills

  • Professional experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D for land surveying or civil engineering purposes
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to direct the activities of a survey crew
  • Physical ability to perform field survey work
  • Full qualifications of a Land Technician and demonstrated ability to perform Lead Land Technician duties as evidenced by the quality and quantity of work product
  • Must pass an agreed-upon written examination testing ability to perform the duties of a Senior Land Technician as assigned

Education Requirements

  • Land Surveyor In Training (LSIT) certificate required

Required Experience

  • Prior professional experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D for land surveying or civil engineering purposes
  • Background in civil engineering, land surveying, government/surveying/mapping departments, survey companies, or city/county agencies is applicable

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Field survey work required; must have physical ability to perform field survey work
  • Role is hybrid: contractor works from home office and reports to Concord, CA on occasion (approximately 1 day/month), with possible field support
  • Vehicle and equipment pick-up from Concord, CA headquarters; dispersed work around the coastal area
  • With prior client approval, travel expense (mileage) reimbursement may be submitted for locations other than the Concord, CA headquarters

  • Equipment: Client laptop will be provided; docking station may potentially be provided by the client if unavailable, supplier must provide; monitors and peripherals must be provided by the contractor/supplier
