Lead Facilities Technician

The Lead Facilities Technician (LFT) is a working lead and second-in-command to the Senior Manager of Facilities. The LFT performs hands-on, multi-trade maintenance while coordinating daily workflow, project planning, and tracking across the Zoos 14-acre campus. This role provides on-the-ground direction, resolves urgent issues, supports safe, high-quality work, and may act in charge during the Senior Managers absence.

Responsibilities: Core Duties

  • Coordinate daily assignments and priorities while performing hands-on maintenance and repairs across the Zoo.
  • Support core Facilities functions including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding/metalwork (as qualified), and grounds work.
  • Fill in for the Senior Manager as acting-in-charge when needed to maintain operational continuity and communication.
  • Assist with capital project planning and execution; sequence work, track status, and support close-out.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, forklifts, aerial lifts, and power tools safely and effectively (training provided as needed).
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on infrastructure and equipment; update records in CMMS.
  • Conduct supply and material runs; maintain tools, vehicles, and work areas in clean, safe condition.
  • Collaborate with Animal Care to ensure safe and respectful work near habitats and in public areas.
  • Assist with event setups, site restoration, and temporary infrastructure.
  • Work in all weather conditions and be available for emergency response or after-hours needs as required.

Responsibilities: Project and Team Support

  • Lead day-to-day workflow: communicate task status, adjust resources, and help remove roadblocks to keep work moving.
  • Provide field-level coaching, share best practices, and model professionalism, punctuality, and safety-first behaviors.
  • Support vendor/contractor coordination, scheduling, escorts, and quality verification.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records for work orders, inspections, and projects; help compile simple reports and KPIs.
  • Provide constructive field feedback on site logistics, safety considerations, and workflow efficiency.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with the Senior Manager, department managers, and cross-department partners.

Skills and Abilities

  • Leadership & Coordination: Able to organize daily assignments, set priorities, and guide technicians without formal supervisory authority.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of tools, equipment, and techniques used in facility maintenance, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, mechanical repair; welding skills preferred.
  • Planning & Tracking: Comfortable with CMMS, checklists, schedules, and basic project trackers; attentive to documentation and follow-through.
  • Problem Solving: Assesses issues in real time and applies practical, safe, and minimally disruptive solutions.
  • Team Collaboration & Communication: Communicates clearly with peers, vendors, and managers; contributes to a respectful, solutions-focused culture.
  • Safety Awareness: Models appropriate PPE usage and follows all protocols (e.g., LOTO, hot work, confined space) particularly near animal habitats and public areas.
  • Time Management: Manages time effectively and completes assignments with appropriate urgency and detail.
  • Physical & Environmental Tolerance: Performs physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including lifting, climbing, and prolonged standing or movement.
  • Customer Service Orientation: Treats guests, colleagues, and volunteers with professionalism and courtesy; supports a positive visitor experience through reliable operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years paid experience in facilities maintenance (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, welding, electrical); prior lead experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required; trade school or technical training preferred.
  • Valid California Drivers License with a clean record required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather and around live animals.
  • Familiarity with basic safety standards, PPE use, and maintenance procedures; additional safety certifications preferred.
