JOB TITLE: Diesel Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Manager
JOB TYPE: Full-time, Non-Exempt
LOCATION: 6225 Thompson Rd, Syracuse, NY 13206
HOURS OF OPERATION: Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM
OVER TIME: Saturday’s as needed
COMPENSATION: $28 - $34 an hour
PURPOSE:
The purpose of a diesel mechanic is to inspect, repair, and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, ensuring they operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and overhaul engines for trucks and heavy machinery, crucial for operations.
RESPONISIBILITIES:
- Perform basic preventative maintenance and safety checks on all diesel vehicles, heavy equipment such as material handlers, loaders, excavators, forklifts, etc.
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy machinery or trucks.
- Diagnose, repair, replace, recondition, dissemble, weld heavy machinery / diesel engines (tractors, roll-off trucks, lugger trucks, excavators, loaders, forklifts and skid steers)
- Repair and replace transmissions, and steering mechanisms, etc.
- Maintain inventory of tools and supplies
- Use specialized tools to fix hydraulic and electronic components.
- Troubleshoot and repair all types of diesel engine machines
- Perform any and all other duties as assigned by the supervisor/manager
- Comply with all company safety measures and government regulations
- Communicate with internal customers (yard, warehouse, transportation staff and management in a courteous and professional manner
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 1–2+ years in heavy equipment or diesel repair experience or trade school equivalent
- Must have own tools
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) a plus
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects (over 50 pounds)
- Squat and kneel
- Bend and twist as appropriate
- Sit/Stand for long periods at a time
- Certifications: ASE Certification, Diesel Certification a plus
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Due to the nature of this role, you are required to wear safety equipment to ensure a safe work environment in designated areas. This includes hard hat, steel-toed / skid resistant work boots, high-visibility clothing / vests, safety glasses, and gloves. All PPE excluding steel-toed / skid resistant work boots will be provided by Metalico.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to lift / push / pull 50-75 lbs alone or with assistance as needed.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms. Ability to use both hands regularly with enough dexterity to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to squat and kneel. Bend and twist as appropriate.
- Awareness (able to see, hear, talk) of surroundings, moving equipment, employees, customers etc. at all times.
- Move about a salvage yard on uneven terrain.
- Expected to participate in required training sessions, presentations, and meetings.
- Exposure to elements and / or non-climate-controlled environment where temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain) may be encountered.
- Work may take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust and fumes.
- Noise level in the work environment is moderate; hearing protection is always provided to employees by the company.
- Prior to hire- Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test and criminal background check
