Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Lead Structured Cabling Technician to oversee and execute complex fiber optic and structured cabling installations for large-scale commercial and data center environments. This role combines advanced technical expertise with daily field leadership, project coordination, and hands-on installation responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with fiber infrastructure, structured cabling systems, team supervision, and quality control while ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to specifications. This position requires regular travel and daily on-site presence to support project teams and operational needs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise installation teams on large-scale structured cabling and fiber optic projects.

  • Maintain a daily on-site presence to oversee project progress, workforce productivity, and quality standards.

  • Ensure team members are completing assigned tasks accurately, safely, and on schedule.

  • Provide hands-on support with installation activities as needed to meet project objectives.

  • Install cable infrastructure and perform fiber rough-in activities.

  • Pull, route, dress, and secure copper and fiber optic cabling.

  • Manage cable dressing, routing, and labeling according to project standards.

  • Create, print, and apply cable and equipment labels to ensure accurate identification and documentation.

  • Perform cable and fiber termination for various network environments.

  • Conduct ribbon and fusion splicing using industry-standard equipment.

  • Install, configure, and terminate single-mode and multi-mode fiber using ST, LC, SC, and SC-APC connectors.

  • Perform fiber testing, certification, troubleshooting, and analysis using Fluke and OTDR equipment.

  • Complete cable testing, patching, troubleshooting, and documentation activities.

  • Rack, stack, and install customer equipment and build out server racks and rack elevations.

  • Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, cable management systems, power trays, and related infrastructure components.

  • Receive, organize, and assemble project materials and hardware.

  • Execute Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations and route fiber into data center facilities.

  • Troubleshoot installation issues and perform quality control inspections on completed work.

  • Read, interpret, and follow project drawings, blueprints, and specifications.

  • Communicate professionally with team members, project stakeholders, and management.

  • Conduct safety meetings and enforce compliance with company and regulatory safety requirements.

  • Manage relationships with contractors, project stakeholders, and customers.

  • Coordinate material procurement and forecast labor requirements for project execution.

  • Document and submit blueprint revisions, field changes, and change orders to project management.

  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with applicable safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and OSHA guidelines.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Data Center Technician.

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on fiber optic installation experience, including fiber splicing.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing crews of 10 or more team members.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for tracking project information, reporting, and documentation.

  • Experience creating, managing, and printing cable and equipment labels.

  • Strong knowledge of fiber optic installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and structured cabling systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and technical documentation.

  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Willingness and ability to travel as required for project assignments.

  • Ability to work safely and effectively in fast-paced construction and data center environments.

  • Physical ability to work on ladders, scissor lifts, and in confined spaces.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds as needed.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical tasks throughout scheduled shifts.

  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.

  • Required tools include a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, punch-down tool, flashlight, tool pouch, gloves, and steel-toe or composite-toe work boots.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Data Center Technician.

  • Minimum 5 years of fiber optic installation experience, including fusion and ribbon splicing.

  • Experience leading structured cabling and fiber installation teams on large-scale commercial or data center projects.

  • Experience with cable pulling, cable dressing, testing, labeling, patching, and terminations.

  • Experience using Fluke and OTDR testing equipment.

  • Experience creating and managing project documentation and labeling systems.

  • Experience with OSP and data center infrastructure installations preferred.

  • Experience coordinating field crews while maintaining hands-on involvement in daily project activities.
