Schedule/Hours: Full Time, 40 hours per week

This position is responsible for:

Plans, prepares, cooks and serves approximately 1,700 nutritional meals and snacks per week in accordance with established guidelines and schedules for Bureau of Prisons (BOP) inmates and personnel of The Salvation Army Chattanooga Area Command; ensures all meals are prepared and served in a safe and presentable manner; cleans kitchen facilities, equipment, and appliances; maintains inventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner; assigns, instructs and monitors work of other Cooks and/or Kitchen Assistants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that enough food is prepared based on the number of people to be served and that food is prepared in a timely manner as scheduled
  • Serves food and beverages in a presentable manner; prepares plates for BOP inmates and personnel of The Salvation Army Chattanooga Area Command as needed.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, floors, dishes, utensils, and kitchen appliances
  • Stores, refrigerates, and freezes food in a safe and economical manner in accordance with local food code; monitors expiration dates on all foods ensuring proper disposal of food with expired dates
  • Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room; ensures that all meals are prepared in a safe manner; ensures all kitchen personnel practice proper personal hygiene; ensures compliance with health standards and regulations with local food code.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements
  • Ability to arrive on time for all scheduled shifts
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language
  • Ability to cook, taste, and smell food
  • Duties are usually performed by frequent walking and/or standing, kneeling, or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting
  • Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull light objects (less than 25 lbs.)

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a normal kitchen environment where there may be limited physical discomforts associated with working around hot stoves/ovens or cold freezers.
  • Work requires driving a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent, And Three years' experience cooking food for large groups with some experience coordinating the work of other kitchen staff,

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
