The Yakima School District is hiring a Bus Mechanic Lead!
Are you an experienced mechanic looking to step into a leadership role, where your work directly impacts the safety and well-being of students?
This position routinely plans, prioritizes, and supervises the work of mechanics and service employees of the Transportation department. The position shall perform any work assigned to Transportation Department staff performing at their level within the bargaining unit. Provide lead direction of Transportation staff with the authority to assign, organize and monitor work. Make observations related to job duties such as unsafe work practices and non-performance of job duties. Assist the Director of Transportation in evaluating and or planning the needs of the District’s programs and systems as needed. This position is responsible for the efficient and effective use of equipment, materials and personnel to complete transportation work in a timely and cost-effective manner. Duties do not include the authority to evaluate, hire, or terminate employees.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A combination of experience and training that provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities in transportation shop operations.
- Successful lead or supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of mechanical operation and repair of school transportation vehicles.
- Experience in inventory and accounting practices of a shop operation.
- Ability to organize and manage.
- Ability to understand department systems and identify internal controls.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with staff and public.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff.
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to assume responsibility without supervision.
- Physical ability to perform required duties.
- Demonstrated record of punctuality and regular attendance.
Other Functions and Responsibilities:
- Schedule and coordinate all vehicle and equipment work orders. Plan and schedule work assignments.
- Provide daily floor supervision of shop repair work providing on the job instruction, team work collaboration, and monitoring of shop personnel.
- Actively participate as a mechanic in repair work.
- Provide recommendations and oversight for parts room inventory practices.
- Review, approve, and process paperwork related to the transportation shop.
- Evaluate and arrange for in-service training activities for shop personnel. Review and modify shop procedures on a regular basis to maintain cost effective, and quality mechanical services for Transportation shop.
- Maintain total safety compliance programs of WISHA/OSHA related to the shop.
- Provide regular shop status reports to the Transportation Director.
- Identify systemic improvements related to shop procedures and practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Expectations for Continued Employment:
- Employment is contingent upon passing a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau
- Investigation fingerprint screening examination and background check.
- Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours.
- Comply with all District policies and operational procedures.
- Must maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
- Complete SafeSchool’s online training in accordance with the Yakima School District.
- Obtain a CPR and First Aid Card if needed.
- Attend job specific trainings as required.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Pay Range $38.70 - $40.74 per hour (depending on experience.)
