The Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine’s Molecular Pathology Core Lab is recruiting to fill a full-time Laboratory Technician I position. This position performs a variety of established laboratory procedures and techniques in support of research and diagnostic activities within the Department of Pathology. The incumbent will work under direct supervision and follow established protocols to prepare, process, stain, and maintain tissue specimens for downstream laboratory applications.

Classification Minimum Requirements:

Associate's degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Job Description:

The Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine’s Molecular Pathology Core Lab is recruiting to fill a full-time Laboratory Technician I position. This position performs a variety of established laboratory procedures and techniques in support of research and diagnostic activities within the Department of Pathology. The incumbent will work under direct supervision and follow established protocols to prepare, process, stain, and maintain tissue specimens for downstream laboratory applications.

Tissue Sectioning and Specimen Preparation

  • Prepare tissue specimens for analysis by sectioning paraffin-embedded and frozen tissue blocks at varying thicknesses according to established protocols and project requirements.

  • Ensure accurate specimen handling, identification, and quality control throughout the sectioning process.

Tissue Processing and Embedding

  • Perform tissue harvesting, trimming, fixation, processing, and embedding of specimens according to investigator and laboratory requirements.

  • Operate tissue processors, including Leica ASP 300 and Tissue-Tek VIP systems, utilizing established processing programs.

  • Maintain specimen integrity and documentation throughout processing workflows.

Histology Staining and Slide Preparation

  • Perform routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, special staining procedures, coverslipping, and slide preparation.

  • Generate and apply specimen labels for cassettes and slides using laboratory printers and manual labeling methods as needed.

  • Verify slide quality and accuracy prior to distribution.

Laboratory Operations and Record Maintenance

  • Maintain laboratory records, specimen tracking information, and data entry within laboratory databases.

  • Assist with maintaining laboratory workspaces, supplies, reagents, and equipment to ensure efficient operations.

  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain laboratory instruments and work areas in accordance with established safety procedures.

  • Handle biohazardous materials and hazardous chemicals in compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.

  • Assist with inventory management and stocking of laboratory supplies.

Expected Salary:

$18.00 - $20.00 per hour

Required Qualifications:

Associate's degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred:

At least two years of histology lab working experience.
