About the Role:

The Laboratory Specialist (Pretreatment Compliance) assists in implementing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-mandated Industrial Pretreatment Program by monitoring industrial wastewater discharges, supporting compliance efforts, conducting inspections and sampling activities, and providing technical guidance to regulated industries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in administering the Citys Industrial Pretreatment Program in accordance with EPA, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct inspections, sampling, monitoring, and compliance evaluations of industrial wastewater dischargers.
  • Monitor compliance with wastewater discharge permits and the City of Greensboro Sewer Use Ordinance.
  • Review analytical data and evaluate wastewater discharge characteristics.
  • Provide technical assistance and regulatory guidance to industrial users.
  • Document inspection findings, monitoring results, and compliance activities.
  • Assist with permit development, compliance determinations, and enforcement actions when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare technical reports supporting regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, laboratories, regulatory agencies, and industrial customers to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Support initiatives that protect wastewater treatment processes, biosolids quality, employee safety, and environmental health.

Additional Position Details:

  • Work includes office, laboratory, industrial facility, and field environments.
  • Position may require walking industrial sites, collecting wastewater samples, climbing stairs, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting of sampling equipment and field supplies may be required.
  • This position requires sound professional judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects while meeting regulatory deadlines.
  • Position is Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • "OR" equivalency of an Associates Degree with 6+ years of wastewater, laboratory, and/or pretreatment analyst in a directly related Science field.

  • "OR" equivalency of a High School Diploma with 8+ years of wastewater, laboratory, and/or pretreatment analyst experience in a "directly related" Science field.

  • Valid Drivers License

  • 4+ years of related wastewater processes and laboratory experience, and/or pretreatment analyst experience in a "directly related" Science field.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Must obtain one of the following within 18 months of hire date:

  • NC C surface water operator certification/ Grade I Wastewater Laboratory Analyst certification

  • NC bacteriological certification

An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelors Degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or other related Science field
  • Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification and/or Pretreatment Certification (from any certifying state or entity)
  • Previous work experience with the public
  • Previous experience working with the State and Federal regulatory agencies
