Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This position is responsible for prepping and maintaining the introductory, instructional biology laboratory sections. This includes but is not limited to: daily maintenance of multiple instructional laboratory sections (several days each week), setting up and breaking down laboratory materials, ordering, preparing, and culturing laboratory materials.

This position involves use of a P-Card.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Excellent organization skills. Ability to work independently and trouble shoot problems. Good interpersonal skills and collaborative attitude. Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, basic computer skills.

Physical Demands

Moderate lifting of lab equipment. Hand-eye coordination needed to work culturing organisms under microscopes. Driving to perform job related duties.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Maintain detailed laboratory prep notes of standard operating procedures and updating with changes as needed. Maintenance of records and documentation associated with the teaching laboratory classrooms. This includes cleaning and maintaining equipment (microscopes, spectrophotometers, pipets, etc.), arranging professional service for instruments to be cleaned and calibrated as needed. Keeping records of safety data sheets for chemical use and hazardous waste management; providing supervision, safety information, and instructions for student staff; trouble-shooting equipment/supply issues.

Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities

Weekly prep of introductory biology laboratories. This entails setting up and breaking down 2-3 teaching laboratories each week; daily stocking and changing out lab materials to support GLA (Graduate Laboratory Assistant) teaching. Email communications to students and GLAs in the specific lab course(s) that the lab manager is assigned. Other duties as assigned.

Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities

Planning, scheduling, and placing orders; culturing, collecting, and preparing materials needed for the teaching laboratories each semester. This also includes picking up cargo vans for course field trips.

Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities

Provide daily oversight and support to the GLAs assigned to the lab manager's course(s). Answer questions specific to the course(s) the lab manager oversees. Attend the weekly instructional meeting and lead portions of the meeting that support pedagogical focus (e.g. experiment-specific instructions, other lab methods such as how entire laboratory should run, laboratory layout and design). Monitoring GLA preparation and attendance to instructional meetings and teaching sessions. Scheduling and independently holding make-up instructional meetings for absent GLAs. This also includes driving cargo vans to field trip sites.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

Provide collaborative input into new curriculum proposals, eLC content, lab activities, etc. This includes testing new laboratories.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Assisting with Division graduation, and requests from other UGA faculty/departments and initiatives of existing community outreach programs.
