Responsibilities:
  • Provides support to the laboratory staff by performing supervised functions and laboratory services
  • Requires moderate supervision to safely perform patient care/essential functions
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and when moving equipment/supplies that are necessary to perform essential functions; recognizes the receipt of a properly labeled, collected and preserved specimen
  • Accessions and/or verifies receipt of specimens in writing or by computer
  • Enters orders for lab tests in LIS
  • Centrifuges or otherwise prepares specimens
  • Checks specimens into additional tubes or containers
  • Labels and distributes to appropriate laboratory section for testing or stores properly in refrigerator/freezer for later testing or transport to a reference laboratory
  • Completes requisition and/or log for specimens referred to reference laboratories
  • Provides collection information for send out tests
  • Files send out test results
  • Initiates charge document for send out tests
  • Draws blood specimens for inpatients and outpatients
  • Utilizes computer programs for laboratory functions
  • Utilizes pneumatic tube system to send specimens to and from the laboratory’ organizes phlebotomy rounds
  • Maintains supply inventory and orders replacements
  • Maintains clean, neat and efficient work area
  • Assists in clerical duties of the laboratory, when needed
  • Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values
  • Adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality
  • Participates in continued education activities
  • Communicates and uses appropriate customer relations skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via telephone
  • Correctly reads laboratory test results over the telephone
  • Directs callers to the appropriate laboratory section
  • Facilitates the flow of information to the laboratory users regarding specimen collection requirements, ordering requirements and general laboratory operation information
  • Maintains accurate and complete records
  • Maintains files of laboratory requisitions, laboratory reports and quality control data
  • Documents customer complaints, ordering and registration errors and reports each to supervisor for correction action
  • Accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict
  • Cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit
  • Utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations: Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adults, and Geriatric
  • Assists in training new lab personnel and students, scheduling lower level staff if needed, ordering supplies and inventory management
  • Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
  • Related duties as assigned
Additional Information:

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Required
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory Preferred
  • Experience teaching phlebotomy to health professionals Preferred
  • Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
