Job Summary
PRN Rotate
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant - Phlebotomist performs routine technical and clerical functions. The CLA performs venipuncture - capillary puncture, labels tubes and specimen containers, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens; may perform CLIA waived laboratory tests. The lab assistant - phlebotomist completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period.
Responsibilities
General Functions:
Performs venous and capillary phlebotomy
Maintains specimen integrity and follows proper labeling protocols for specimens' tubes/containers
Processes blood and other body fluids for various analyses to be performed by either BHS or reference laboratories.
Tests specimens, under general supervision, for clinical studies in accordance with established BHS policies and procedures
Reports lab results accurately and responsively, recognizing abnormal or unexpected results, errors and problems with patient tests.
Inputs and retrieves data from the laboratory computer system.
Performs basic clerical functions
Assists in stocking and maintaining laboratory supply inventory
Assists with training phlebotomists or laboratory students
Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
Maintains safe environment
Addresses patient population-specific needs obtaining blood specimens for all age groups served.
Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
Uses, maintains and cleans laboratory equipment and uses protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemicals, radiation and infectious hazards.
Is knowledgeable of emergency procedures.
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Completion of a Phlebotomy program
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Six months of hospital lab assistant - phlebotomy experience
