Responsibilities

  • Specimen Processing: Register, order, and accession specimens using lab and hospital systems; verify patient information and ensure test accuracy and compliance with coding and Medicare policies
  • Specimen Collection: Perform phlebotomy and specimen handling, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, organizing, storing, and preparing for transport per DOT and IATA regulations
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluate specimen integrity and appropriateness; resolve issues and cancel or adjust orders as needed
  • Communication: Provide guidance on specimen collection, lab processes, and results; monitor orders to ensure timely collection
  • Training: Train, mentor, and evaluate students and new staff

Qualifications

Education:

High school graduate or equivalent required.

Training as a unit clerk, medical assistant, medical secretary, or phlebotomist is preferred.

Coursework in biology and/or chemistry is considered.

Previous employment in a medical setting, in computer operations, and/or with telephone demands is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
