Description
This position maintains a safe and sanitary facility for all shelter animals, and provides humane handling and care by assuring animals' nutrition, housing and basic medical needs are met on a daily basis. It also assists the public when admitting, redeeming, and adopting animals to promote responsible pet ownership.
Examples of Duties
Custodial Care of Animals - The incumbent ensures that the surroundings for the animals are always clean and sanitized, including kennels, walkways and isolation areas. As part of the process, this position feeds and waters; washes bedding, bowls and toys; empties garbage and cleans the play yard.
Medical Care of Animals - Because this position is often the first person the public sees when admitting, redeeming or adopting animals, the incumbent must observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and report symptoms to appropriate personnel. The incumbent must be able to administer medications and vaccinations, and when necessary, humanely carry out euthanasia. The incumbent may be asked to groom animals as needed.
Custodial Care of Building - While administering to the animals, the incumbent will also clean the administrative areas, including bathrooms and the FOTAS grooming area, and ensure all garbage is removed and laundry done on a timely basis.
Customer Service - This position will assist the public with any questions, including those seeking lost pets and those interested in adoption.
The position works under daily supervision of the Kennel Technician Lead.
The challenge for this position is working and becoming attached to the animals, who may end up sick and needing euthanasia. Further, there is always the possibility of having a highly aggressive animal that needs careful and special handling.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
This job has specific physical requirements such as lifting, driving, ability to travel, etc. ability to carry up to 50 lbs. short distances; ability to humanely restrain animals when necessary
Typical Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Level of Job-Related Education: High School
Minimum Amount of Job-Related Experience: 1 year
Minimum Level of any Required Qualifications, Licenses, Certificates, Registrations, or any Relevant Knowledge, Job Skill or Equivalent Experience: Driver's license; good judgment; ability to identify animal gender, description and breed; ability to perform humane euthanasia and maintain Euthanasia Certificate.
