About the Team
As part of Centellic’s strategic intelligence business, the Law.com regulatory and disputes team delivers authoritative coverage of courts, judges and judicial decision‑making shaping legal risk, regulatory direction and the business environment. Our work focuses on consequential rulings, evolving legal doctrine and the institutional forces influencing the judiciary—along with the lawyers, litigants and power structures intersecting with the courts.
Our journalism functions as decision intelligence for a sophisticated legal and business audience. We connect judicial developments to broader market signals, litigation strategy and policy direction, helping professionals anticipate change and assess implications across jurisdictions.
The New York‑based reporter will join a collaborative, nationally distributed team working closely with editors and colleagues across major legal markets, with a particular focus on state courts and judges with national and global influence.
The Role
This is a high‑visibility assignment with national reach and significant impact. You will produce authoritative, insight‑driven coverage of the judiciary—surfacing early signals in court rulings, opinions, oral arguments and institutional shifts, and translating them into forward‑looking insight for readers who rely on our reporting to inform strategy, risk assessment and long‑term planning.
You will be expected to deliver breaking news at speed, sophisticated analysis with authority and enterprise reporting that explains not only what courts are doing, but what it means—and what may come next
Key Responsibilities
- Cover key state courts based in Downstate New York, with an emphasis on key courts, judges and judicial developments, especially when they carry national or cross‑market significance.
- Monitor judicial elections and selection. Identify and connect with major players in judicial selection, from county politicos to key players in City Hall and on the State Senate Judiciary Committee, to name just a couple of venues.
- Report on major judicial decisions, nominations, recusals, ethics issues and structural changes affecting the judiciary.
- Analyze rulings and opinions to identify broader legal, political and business implications, drawing connections across cases, courts and jurisdictions.
- Ability to leverage resources—from human intelligence and deep dives into case filing data and other statistics, to our data-driven and analytical Radar team and AI—to surface trends and shifts in the litigation landscape before others recognize them.
- Surface early signals by tracking rulings, dissents, concurrences, procedural shifts and judicial behavior to identify emerging doctrinal or institutional trends.
- Produce breaking news on tight deadlines for Law.com publications serving legal and business audiences nationwide.
- Balance daily coverage with enterprise and investigative reporting focused on the judiciary’s role in shaping litigation outcomes, regulatory enforcement and market risk.
- Collaborate with colleagues across Law.com’s global newsroom to develop national trend stories and multi‑court projects.
- Build and maintain a strong network of judges, clerks, litigators, former judicial officials and court experts to generate exclusive insight and deepen the authority of coverage.
- Collaborate effectively with reporters and editors across geographies and platforms, contributing to social media and audience engagement.
- Write with clarity and authority for a highly sophisticated audience that relies on Law.com’s reporting as decision intelligence, not just news.
- Use audience signals and editorial feedback to sharpen coverage priorities and ensure reporting aligns with how professionals use judicial insight in practice.
- As a baseline, reporters are expected to publish at least one story per day, with regular enterprise and analytical work delivered each month.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
- Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, engaging and authoritative journalism on deadlines throughout the day in a digital-first environment.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and sustain deep source relationships, including judges, litigators and court insiders.
- Strong analytical judgment and the ability to synthesize complex judicial developments into actionable insight.
- Comfort working in a fast‑paced, high‑standards environment while balancing breaking news, analysis and enterprise reporting.
- Willingness to attend court proceedings, arguments and judicial events as needed.
- Ability to produce one to three stories per day and at least four enterprise or analytical pieces per month.
- A disciplined mindset with a commitment to rigor, accuracy, editorial excellence and owning your core focus.
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Creative and curious, with interest in using social platforms, documents, data and digital tools to enhance reporting and reach.
- Ideally two or more years of experience in a daily news environment; experience covering courts, law or public institutions is strongly preferred.
- Comfort working with basic data—such as patterns of rulings, opinion trends or docket activity—to support analysis is a plus.
- Expected to work in the newsroom or in the field at least three days per week.
- Must be based in New York City or close by in order to be available to provide live coverage on short notice.
