Jr GIS Technician
Contract Length: 1 Year with Possible Extension
Location: Lawrence Township, NJ
Work Setup: Hybrid (after onsite training period)
Our client is seeking a motivated Jr GIS Technician to support the maintenance and accuracy of utility-based geospatial data systems. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early-career GIS professionals to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative utility environment while working with mapping technologies, asset data, and field operations.
The Jr GIS Technician will support the electric utility GIS model by updating, editing, and maintaining geospatial information related to construction, operations, and maintenance activities. Candidates with experience using GIS applications, map editing, or spatial data management through school, internships, or professional experience are encouraged to apply.
Jr GIS Technician Responsibilities
- Maintain and update GIS-connected utility models using data from work orders, construction drawings, field reports, and asset records
- Edit, modify, and validate geospatial data within mapping systems
- Perform GIS analysis, data queries, and prepare reports, maps, charts, and tabulations
- Produce standard and ad-hoc map prints for field and operational requests
- Maintain service point data and transformer relationships within the GIS network
- Resolve mapping discrepancies, connectivity issues, and land-related conflicts through office and occasional field investigation
- Support utility projects including facility relocations, load rearrangements, and new business installations
- Utilize automated office equipment including plotters, printers, scanners, and drafting tools
- Assist with print distribution activities and support field operations as needed
- Travel periodically to sub-headquarters locations for print distribution rotation
Jr GIS Technician Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 1 2 years of GIS experience through work, internships, or academic projects
- Experience updating, editing, or maintaining geospatial/map-based data
- Understanding of GIS applications and spatial relationships within GIS systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows-based applications
- Valid driver s license in the State of New Jersey
- Ability to work onsite during the initial 8-week training period
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with utility GIS systems, electric transmission/distribution environments, or asset management
- Exposure to MicroStation, AutoCAD, or computer-aided drafting tools
- Field experience or familiarity with utility operations is a plus
Jr GIS Technician Work Environment
- Editors are required to work onsite daily for a minimum of 8 weeks for training
- After successful training, the Jr GIS Technician may transition into a hybrid rotation based on performance, workload, and client scheduling needs
- Approximately 5 10% field work may be required
- Candidates may occasionally use their personal vehicle for local travel assignments
