Job Title: Legal Writing Trainer
Location: Joint Base Andrews, MD 20762
Duration: 1 Month

Pay Range: $100 - $105/hr W2

Responsibilities
The training will instruct strategic and written appellate advocacy skills relevant to criminal cases.
Skills covered will include:
How to analyze trial records
How to brainstorm a theory of the case and appellate issues based on a review of the trial records
How to develop a persuasive appellate story from the facts of the case
How to develop an appellate strategy
How to write a persuasive appellate brief, incorporating storytelling elements; primacy; recency; appropriate repetition; fact-based, evocative, and image-creating language and/or graphics; transitions; clarity; and juxtaposition
How to write a persuasive statement of facts in an appellate brief
Instruction will address skills both in theory and through interactive application by the students to a case they have reviewed in preparation for the training.
The instruction will preferably focus on the defense perspective of criminal appeals (i.e., with a focus on representing the person convicted of the crime(s)).
The instruction will preferably qualify for credit as Continuing Legal Education.
Number of People Trained
Approximately 6 in 2026 (Between 2 and 8 in future years)

Must Have Skills:
Education: A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school 
Appellate advocacy expertise in criminal law
Advanced legal writing and appellate brief drafting
Trial record analysis and issue identification
Appellate strategy development (defense-focused)
Persuasive legal storytelling and narrative building
Strong statement of facts writing
Application of primacy, recency, and repetition techniques
Clear, concise, and structured legal argumentation
Teaching and training delivery skills
Interactive workshop facilitation
Mentoring and constructive feedback ability
Strong verbal and written communication
Legal research and case law analysis
Curriculum and training program development
Experience in criminal appellate practice
Ability to manage multi-day training sessions
Participant engagement and coaching skills
Understanding of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) standards
