GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Performs repair and replacement work in electrical, plumbing, painting and welding for the county correctional facility's buildings, structural components and equipment; designs and fabricates items and equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Repairs and replaces electrical, plumbing, structural components and equipment (i.e., jail doors, cameras, washing machines, kettles, dryers, stoves, air conditioners, toilets, sinks, telephones, sprinkler systems).
  • Designs, fabricates and welds equipment and other items.
  • Directs the work of an inmate crew or individual inmates as needed.
  • Maintains and ensures the safe operating condition of assigned equipment, tools and vehicles according to established department policy and sound trade practices.
  • Performs various record maintenance duties as required (i.e., work orders, materials and supplies utilized, cost estimates, labor required, maintenance logs, fuel logs).
  • Operates man lifts up to 28 feet.
  • Reports any detected deterioration, repair needs and/or maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Assists with the planning, estimating and coordination of more complex tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years of experience in plumbing, electrical work, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid driver license. Arc Welding certification preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate various hand-held manual, electrical and gas-powered equipment and tools, where excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push and pull, or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing/walking. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso for working on scaffolding, climbing ladders and working in confined spaces. Requires excellent equilibrium to prevent falling from narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work

Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of records, reports, policy and procedure manuals, codes, professional journals, etc. in moderately complex terminology. Requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications. Requires the ability to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats, and adhering to all rules of grammar, spelling, diction, and punctuation. Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English and in the various languages relevant to construction activities.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical, or diagrammatic form; to make judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to occupation. Requires the application of principles of influence and synthesis functions.

Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; use decimals and calculate percentages; determine weight; compute discount, profit and loss, ratio and proportion.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with emergencies and frequent deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff and the general public
