ANNOUNCEMENT OF SERVICE VACANCY

POSITION: Itinerant Classroom Special Education Instructional Aide/Autism Mentor & Transportation Aide

LOCATION: Peterson Central Elementary School

QUALIFICATIONS:

As per State and County Regulations. Those presently employed or on the Aide Substitute List will be given preference. Applicant must possess a valid First Aid card and be certified in CPR. Applicants not employed as a SPED Aide must take and pass the State Aide's Competency Test. Applicants must be Autism Mentor certified, or willing to obtain certification.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age, or older
  • High School diploma, or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5
  • Criminal Background check pursuant to WV Code § 18-5-15c
  • Applicant must possess a valid First Aid card and be certified in CPR.
  • Applicants not already employed must take and pass the State Aide's Competency Test
  • Autism Mentor certification, or willing to obtain certification
  • Possibility of riding a bus to assist with transportation to and from school and school related activities

Applicant must be trained or willing to be trained in the following:

  • Autism Mentor
  • Positive Behavioral Support
  • Picture Exchange Communication System
  • Visual Scheduling
  • Autism Mentor certification or willing to obtain certification

DUTIES:

  • Under supervision of a licensed teacher, prepare for classroom activities
  • Assist students with non-instructional classroom duties, on the playground in the cafeteria and loading and unloading buses
  • Assist students to learn to care for their own personal belongings
  • Assist with recess and necessary "extra" trips
  • Handling routine interruptions and aid on occasions with the teacher is attending to other responsibilities
  • Assist the teacher in the development of student self-discipline through reinforcement of positive behavior
  • Assist during instructional times with activities such as drill work, reading, storytelling, small group functions, as well as assist students at individual station activities
  • Work with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher
  • Evaluate the day's work with the teacher and make plans for the following day
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality information about students as is expected of fully licensed teacher
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and LC BOE policies
  • Assist teacher in the use of all available computer hardware and software.
  • Assist the student in the use of maintenance of all available computer hardware and software
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position will frequently require the employee to crawl, sit, stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions.
  • This position may require lifting/moving at least 50 pounds (100 pounds vertically for Special Education and Transportation positions) of children, materials, etc.

RESPONSBILITIES FOR THE BUS RUN:

  • Share in responsibility of protecting students, equipment, materials and facilities
  • Perform bus monitoring duties as assigned
  • Supervise student(s) during loading/unloading the bus and while bus is in motion
  • Provide physical assistance when necessary while following approved safety procedures
  • Secure and monitor safety restraints, including but not limited to, seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair tie downs
  • Assist in emergency evacuation procedures and follow established transportation safety protocols
  • Provide services according to the student's needs as documented on IEPs, 504 plans, SAT plans or as otherwise assigned
  • Maintain position work habits
  • Participate in required staff meetings and required in-service training, including transportation and safety
  • Perform specialized health care procedures as needed
  • Perform any and all other job-related duties as assigned by the principal, special education director or superintendent

SALARY: As provided in WV Code 18A-4-8 and 18A-4-8a

SCHEDULE: 6:30 AM â 4:30 PM

(time could vary to accommodate student schedules)

TERM: 200 Days
