General Description

This class works on projects/issues of medium to high complexity regarding networks, servers, and storage. This class is considered essential personnel and also available for on-call support outside of regular business hours or work schedule.

Examples of Duties

Maintains the server and network environment within the network as well as server backups, data security, light programming, and basic networking.

Acts as Level 2 Tech support to the helpdesk and addresses problems with user profiles, email accounts, and missing files.

Patch management for both servers and workstations, researches and recommends solutions that will increase availability and uptime for all systems in the organization.

Designs, implements, and maintains backup strategies in conjunction with retention guidelines and departmental need.

Evaluates, tests, and recommends new technologies, hardware, and software solutions to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and security.

Assists with budgeting, procurement, inventory management, and asset lifecycle planning for information technology systems and infrastructure.

Creates, builds, and deploys virtual machines from self-defined templates and clones.

Scales and builds raid groups, storage groups, and LUNs.

Scales, builds and manages multiple SAN arrays and systems.

Performs project management as needed.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Information Systems or related field, and two (2) years of relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Experience with Cisco, VMware, and EMC is preferred. Preferred certifications include: CCNA, MCSE, MCITP, VCP, or ISMS, or similar certifications.

Knowledge of (position requirements at entry):

Application of Microsofts Directory Services, Group Policy, and Domain concepts.

Microsoft 365 administration including Exchange Online, Entra ID (Azure Active Directory), Conditional Access, and Intune.

Complex routing and switching concepts through the first 4 layers of the OSI model.

Disaster Recovery concepts and principles.

Virtualization concepts, resource pools, server scaling, and performance analysis.

SAN concepts including iSCSI, Fibre Channel, fabric zoning, IOPS scaling and storage performance analysis.

SMTP, POP, and IMAP protocols, specifically how they function.

Skills in (position requirements at entry):

Customer service and first call problem resolution.

Administration and troubleshooting of Microsoft 365, Azure, and cloud-based technologies.

Developing technical standards, policies, procedures, and documentation.

Managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and operational requirements.

Problem solving and root cause analysis.

Strong troubleshooting through layer 4 of the OSI.

Administration of both Microsoft and Linux.

Configuration of Cisco routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless.

Configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Cisco UCS/VOIP/Hyperconverged

Configuring, managing, and troubleshooting VMware infrastructures.

Configure and maintain an EMC SAN environment.

Project management.

Technical documentation.

Windows scripting.

Maintaining an Exchange Messaging environment to include moving datastores, modifying individual user settings as well as establishing enterprise defaults.

Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Sedentary Work:

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
