    UNC Health Cary Orthopaedics – Interventional Pain/Spine Advanced Practice Provider 

    Position Summary 

    Cary Orthopaedics is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing Interventional Pain and Spine team. This role is ideal for a clinician with a strong interest in spine and pain management who enjoys working in a collaborative, patient-centered environment. The APP will work closely with the physician in an outpatient setting, managing patients with acute and chronic pain conditions while receiving ongoing mentorship and procedural training. No call responsibilities are required, and flexible FTE options are available. 

    Key Responsibilities 

    • Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic pain conditions, particularly spine-related disorders. 
    • Review and interpret MRI and other diagnostic imaging studies to support diagnosis and treatment planning. 
    • Conduct follow-up visits after interventional procedures, including spinal injections and other pain management treatments. 
    • Collaborate closely with the physician to develop, implement, and adjust individualized treatment plans. 
    • Manage clinic patients independently while the physician is performing procedures and seeing patients in other care settings. 
    • Perform select office-based procedures within scope of practice and training, which may include: 

          Trigger point injections 

          Greater trochanteric bursa injections 

          Removal of spinal cord stimulator leads 

    • Participate in ongoing procedural training and professional development opportunities, including instruction in ultrasound-guided procedures and additional pain management techniques. 
    • Provide patient education and ensure accurate, timely documentation. 

    Qualifications 

    • Licensed Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Physician Assistant (PA); both are encouraged to apply. 
    • Prior experience in pain management, spine care, orthopedics, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, or a related specialty preferred. 
    • Experience with opioid management and urine drug screen interpretation and monitoring strongly preferred. 
    • Competence in reviewing MRI imaging and correlating findings with clinical presentations. 
    • Strong clinical assessment, communication, and teamwork skills. 
    • Interest in expanding procedural skills through physician mentorship and hands-on training. 
    • Ability to work independently while contributing to a multidisciplinary team. 

    Schedule & Work Environment 

    • 0.6 FTE. 
    • No call or after-hours responsibilities. 
    • Outpatient clinic setting within a well-established orthopedic and spine practice. 
    • Opportunity to build expertise in interventional pain management through direct physician mentorship and training.

    Education Requirements:

    • Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
    Licensure/Certification Requirements:
    • Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina.
    • Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.

    • Documentation in the medical record to substantiate accurate billing.
