Intervention Specialist / Special Education Teacher (SPED) K-12

Primary Role and Purpose

Provide students with disabilities appropriate learning activities and educational experiences designed to help them achieve their full potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop and implement individualized instructional materials, modified curriculum, and lesson plans aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Work collaboratively in self-contained, inclusion, team-teaching, departmental, or itinerant settings as needed.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

  • Valid Ohio teaching license/certificate with appropriate Special Education endorsements.
  • Compliance with all state and federal requirements for special education services.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, procedures, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of the IEP process, including evaluation, goal development, implementation, and progress monitoring.
  • Understanding of differentiated instruction, curriculum modification, and instructional strategies for students with disabilities.
  • Effective classroom management and behavior intervention skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with general education teachers, parents, administrators, and related service providers.
  • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of educational technology and assistive technology tools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Planning & Delivery
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for assigned students.
  • Participate in IEP/ETR/MTSS meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Design and adapt instructional materials and lesson plans to meet individual student needs.
  • Provide specialized instruction in academic, behavioral, social, and functional skill areas.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented appropriately.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional methods, media, technology, and intervention strategies to support student learning.
  • Ensure compliance with all IEP requirements and timelines.
Student Growth & Assessment
  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, progress monitoring, and special education documentation.
  • Support students' emotional, behavioral, and social development.
  • Assist with personal care, medical needs, feeding, or mobility support when required by student IEPs.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities and school programs as assigned.
Classroom Management
  • Create and maintain a structured, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and classroom management strategies.
  • Manage crisis situations safely and appropriately, including physical restraint when required and trained according to district policy and student IEPs.
  • Collaborate with staff and outside agencies to address students' educational, behavioral, medical, and personal needs.
  • Maintain a safe classroom environment and protect school property and instructional materials.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns effectively through conferences, meetings, and written reports.
  • Work collaboratively with administrators, intervention teams, paraprofessionals, and related service providers.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in professional development and ongoing training related to special education and instructional practices.
  • Remain current with federal, state, and district regulations regarding special education services.
  • Attend faculty meetings, committee meetings, and other school functions as required.
  • Complete and maintain all required reports, records, and compliance documentation in a timely manner.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise and direct assigned paraprofessionals, teacher aides, and volunteers.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in stressful situations.
  • Some lifting and physical activity may be required.
  • May be required to safely restrain students according to approved training and district procedures.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed by the administration.
