Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Duties
JOB DUTIES:
- Provide high-quality, real-time sign language interpretation (ASL to spoken English and vice-versa) for all classroom instruction, lectures, and group discussions.
- Tailor communication modes and vocabulary to match the student's age, developmental level, and specific Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
- Preview lesson plans, textbooks, and technical terminology in advance to ensure accurate delivery during complex subjects.
- Interpret for non-academic school functions, including lunch, recess, assemblies, field trips, and safety drills.
- Facilitate direct communication between the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing student, their hearing peers, and school staff to foster student independence.
- Collaborate closely with general education teachers, Deaf Education specialists, and speech-language pathologists to optimize the student''s learning environment.
- Maintain strict student confidentiality and professional boundaries in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Monitor and adjust classroom logistics, such as seating arrangements and lighting, to guarantee the student has a clear, unobstructed line of sight.
- Keep accurate daily logs of services rendered for school district auditing and Medicaid billing purposes.
- Participate in required district staff meetings, professional development days, and specialized training sessions.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must hold a valid License approved by the Illinois State Board of Education with an endorsement in Educational Sign Language Interpreter.
- Must meet one of the following credential requirements:
- Attained a rating of Level 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA); or
- Hold a current, valid certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); or
- Hold a current, valid Illinois Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (IL BEI) Basic Certification or higher issued by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC).
Salary/Benefits
SALARY: Starting at $30.00 (Will compensate for years of experience in a public-school setting.)
Collective Bargaining Agreement
SCHEDULE: 5 days a week/6.5 work hours plus a 30-minute duty-free lunch
BENEFITS: Group health insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, sick and personal time, and retirement.
