Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of clerical experience, preferably in a medical office
  • Relevant education may substitute for one year of clerical experience
  • Knowledge of medical office procedures and insurance policies
  • Familiarity with referrals and pre-certification requirements
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, CPT, and ICD-9 coding
  • Computer and word-processing skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work under pressure
  • Manual dexterity for computer use
  • Correctable 20/20 vision and hearing within the normal range

Job Duties

  • Contact Medicare, BlueCross BlueShield, and other payers
  • Verify orders against pre-certification records
  • Request pre-certification upgrades or downgrades
  • Review claim denials and verify coding accuracy
  • Research coding requirements using appropriate resources
  • Review imaging and creatinine laboratory reports
  • Follow up on unpaid claims based on age and balance
  • Resolve claim-processing problems
  • Appeal justified claim denials
  • Identify problem payers and denial trends
  • Document follow-up activity in IDX
  • Maintain current insurance-carrier information
  • Monitor insurance-industry changes
  • Notify staff of relevant policy updates
  • Maintain positive relationships with patients, employees, and the public
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
