Central Sterile Processing Training at Summa Health - Free Classes

Do you want to join the medical field but are concerned about paying for school and job prospects after graduation? The Summa Health Smart Start Program may be for you!

The Summa Health Smart Start Program gives individuals an opportunity to earn a medical certificate with paid tuition while building a career at Summa Health. Our students attend a eight (8) week in-person training program at the University of Akron while holding a part-time position in the Central Sterile Processing Department at Summa Health. This academic program is focused on a career in Central Sterile Processing.

Program participants are offered 100% paid tuition in addition to paid fees for books, supplies, and equipment. After graduation, we help employees transition into a new career at Summa Health as a full-time (40 hours per week) Central Sterile Processing Technician.

About the Career:

A sterile processing technician plays an important role in indirectly providing patient care. Sterile processing technicians carefully sterilize each medical instrument and piece of equipment to ensure the safety of patients and medical staff. This career offers competitive wages and a start in the medical field.

The Smart Start Program for Central Sterile Processing begins in September of 2024. It is a one semester program with full-time employment starting immediately after graduation.

Summary:

Provides clean and sterile supplies and equipment through decontamination, preparation, sterilization, storage and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process under the direction of a Unit Manager/Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Formal Education Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read and write English and follow oral and written instructions

Experience and Training Required:

  • Current HSPA or CBSP Certification or in an approved certification program. Be able to obtain certification within six months of hire date.

Other Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to work well within a team environment: by accepting and offering honest and constructive feedback; by supporting team goals and encouraging other team members; and by collaborating to consolidate work, solve problems, create new methods, and/or reduce costs.
  • Ability to be self-directed in executing responsibilities within a team structure.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, frequent pushing, pulling, and cleaning equipment and materials.
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology for surgical applications.

Level of Physical Demands:

  • Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
