The City of Pasadena - Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department has an immediate need for an instructor (Youth Sports) knowledgeable and passionate about youth sports. This position requires experience in instructing techniques and fundamentals of basketball and flag football. This opportunity will provide the ability to coach, train, recruit, and officiate sporting activities in a community rich in sportsmanship.

Instructor (Youth Sports) teaches and instructs the youth sports program and possesses knowledge of game rules and fundamentals. The ideal candidate must be punctual, reliable, and available during youth sports hours which will include evenings and weekends. The successful candidate must be inclusive, innovative, and able to work with a variety of parents, staff, and participants of varied cultural backgrounds and demographics.

Work Schedule - works up to 19 hours per week with a varied work schedule that may include working evenings and weekends. Typically, youth sports working hours are Monday through Friday 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Hours are subject to change.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and teaches assigned sports classes, practices, camps, clinics, trainings, tournaments, games, and workshops in program areas such as youth basketball and flag football.
  • Develops lesson plans, practice schedules, athletic skills and fundamentals for each sport.
  • Coach advanced, beginner, and intermediate youth ages 5-14 how to play basketball and flag football preparing them for league games.
  • Assess talent skill levels and place participants in the correct level of play.
  • Communicate with parents and players team expectations, practice requirements, practice details, and league details.
  • Encourages sportsmanship; provides structured team competition.
  • Monitors sports leagues and facilities.
  • Tracks and monitors equipment at sports facilities and may oversee parking at sporting events.
  • Determines and recommends supplies and equipment needed for sports classes and related activities.
  • Transports and ensures security of equipment and supplies issued.
  • Maintains attendance and other records as required.
  • Physical strength and ability to carry and pull 25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Follows and enforces established policies and procedures.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

Minimum qualifications:

  • Instructor (Youth Sports) a minimum of one year of recent full-time experience teaching team sports in the area(s) of basketball and flag football or at least one year of education in Recreation/Physical Education or related field.

Desired qualifications:

  • Adaptive and inclusive work recreation experience highly preferred.
  • Experience in coaching youth ages 5-14 highly preferred.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process may consist of a combination of training and experience evaluation, Subject Matter Review (SME), structured interview panel, and/or department-level interviews.

Special Requirements

Instructor (Youth Sports) position works up to 19 hours per week with a varied work schedule that may include working evenings and weekends. Typically, youth sports working hours are Monday through Friday 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Please note hours may be adjusted as needed to accommodate program requirements and class schedules.

The City of Pasadena contracts with the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to manage our defined benefits program for eligible employees. CalPERS manages the pension and health benefits to more than 1.6 million public employees, retirees, and their families and more than 3,000 employers.

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula (if a miscellaneous employee) and 2.7% at 57 benefit formula (if a safety employee).

Employees who are deemed "Classic" members of CalPERS or a reciprocal system such as the Los Angeles County Employees' Retirement System (LACERA) or Los Angeles City Employees Retirement System (LACERS) will receive the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula (if a miscellaneous employee) or 3% at 55 benefit formula (if a safety employee). A CalPERS "Classic" member is a member who previously worked for a California public agency and meets the following criteria:

  • First established CalPERS membership or membership in a CalPERS reciprocal agency prior to January 1, 2013,
  • And is hired by the City of Pasadena after a break in service of less than six months
  • And did not have concurrent (overlapping) service with the other agency.
