Position Information

Job Title Instructor of Electrical Systems Technology (9-month position) Job Description

The Instructor of Electrical Systems Technology is responsible for delivering learner-centered instruction across traditional, online, and hybrid formats, utilizing industry-standard tools, equipment, and instructional practices while emphasizing safety, hazard awareness, and compliance with current electrical codes. The instructor fosters a high-quality learning environment by effectively planning and managing classroom and laboratory activities, evaluating student performance, maintaining accurate and timely course documentation in college systems, and supporting student success through mentoring and appropriate referrals to campus resources.

The instructor actively participates in student recruitment, program promotion, retention, transfer, and job placement efforts while fostering strong relationships with business and industry partners to ensure program alignment with workforce and community needs. Additional responsibilities include assisting with program assessment and continuous improvement initiatives, supporting and mentoring adjunct faculty, participating in advisory committees, attending college meetings and events, and contributing to the overall mission and goals of the College.

This full-time 9-month position is grant-funded for a limited duration. Funding is anticipated through May 15, 2028. The position is expected to become self-sustaining through enrollment growth; however, continued employment beyond the grant period is contingent upon funding availability, institutional approval, and program sustainability.

A reasonable and equitable teaching load will be determined collaboratively between the instructor and the departmental chair, in consultation with the division dean. This workload may include a combination of traditional classroom instruction, distance education, workforce development instruction, academic mentoring, professional development, curriculum development, and other related administrative responsibilities. Classes may be offered during the day, evening, and/or weekends based on program and student needs.

Wilkes (Main) Campus will be the primary teaching location; however, the instructor may be assigned teaching duties at the Ashe Campus and/or the Alleghany Center based on instructional and operational needs.

The Instructor of Electrical Systems Technology reports directly to the department chairperson or division dean and works collaboratively with the lead instructor and the Workforce Development and Community Education division to support instructional quality, program growth, and workforce training needs.

Full Time or Part Time Full Time Essential Duties Summary

Instructor's duties include:

  • Eighteen to twenty-five contact hours teaching load comprised of courses within the Electrical Systems and Applied Engineering Technology programs, plus a minimum of five scheduled office hours per week.
  • Plan, create, and maintain a classroom and lab environment conducive to student learning, including the setup, supervision, teardown, and cleanup of lab activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the electrical field and applicable codes, and incorporate effective, practical instructional techniques in both classroom and lab settings.
  • Provide hands-on instruction using industry-standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment, while emphasizing safe work practices, hazard awareness, and proper tool usage.
  • Actively recruit and engage prospective students through targeted outreach efforts at high schools, career fairs, and community events.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate qualified adjunct instructors in conjunction with other full-time faculty members in the discipline, as appropriate.
  • Assist with semester scheduling and textbook orders for the programs.
  • Maintain and grow strong relationships with business and industry partners to support program growth, including active participation on advisory committees and alignment with workforce needs.
  • Ensure that syllabi, instructor information, web attendance, and gradebook are posted in a timely manner to the college learning management systems (Moodle and Self-Service) for all sections of all courses being taught each semester.
  • Assist students as needed toward completion of program, diploma, or degree goals, and assist students with job placement or college transfer.
  • Learner-centered, outcomes-based instruction, delivered via traditional classroom, interactive videos, and the internet.
  • Participate in program and general education outcomes assessment and assist with the development and implementation of improvement plans.
  • Refer students, as appropriate, to student support areas of WCC including Counseling and/or Student Support Services, the Academic Support Center, Learning Resources Center, Student Services, the Writing Center, etc. Utilize the college's alert system to notify of students who need assistance.
  • Attend commencement exercises, committee and task force meetings, and faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Instructor, Departmental Chairperson, Dean of Division, and/or Vice President of Instruction.

Required Qualifications

  • AAS in Electrical Systems or related field, from an accredited institution
  • A minimum of two (2) years of successful work experience in Electrical Systems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • State of North Carolina Electrician's License
  • Bachelor's degree in the discipline or related field, or equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience in the subject area

Physical Demands

Work is primarily performed in an academic setting, including classrooms and office environments with standard climate controls. Occasional travel, as well as early morning, evening, or limited weekend work, may be required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, communicate effectively with students and colleagues, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other instructional technology. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus for reading, grading, and computer work.

The position may involve:

  • Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time
  • Light lifting (typically up to 15-20 pounds), such as books, instructional materials, or equipment
  • Occasional reaching, bending, or stooping

Salary Grade Salary Salary Hiring Range $45,000 to $60,000 (9 months) based on education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
