Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, is a national leader in teaching, research, and innovation in the fundamental chemical and biochemical sciences that are shaping America's future. The Department invites applications for three full-time, professional-track faculty position at the rank of Instructor, to begin on August 16, 2026. This is a nine-month appointment, with primary teaching responsibilities in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Forensic Science, either in classroom or laboratory settings. This appointment is renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, availability of funds, and approval by the Dean.

The instructor will either teach 4 lecture courses per semester (8 courses total per 9-month appointment), or the equivalent in chemistry labs (General Chemistry I and II, Introduction to Forensic Science, Organic Chemistry, and/or chemistry for non-science majors, etc.), or an equivalent combination of lectures and labs to meet Departmental needs. For lab courses, the Instructor will also ensure that essential chemicals and appropriate instrumentation are available. The instructor will also provide support to the Department's lecture or lab programs as necessary.

Required Education and Experience

  • This position requires either (1) a master's degree in chemistry or forensic science and at least six semesters of experience teaching undergraduate courses (as a graduate teaching assistant or instructor of record) in general chemistry, forensic science, organic chemistry, chemistry for non-science majors, and/or related laboratory instruction by the appointment start date; or (2) a Ph.D. in chemistry, forensic science, or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date, with evidence of potential for excellence in teaching.
