Starting annual salary is $45,043 for a 218-day contract, prorated at 0.85 FTE. Includes a comprehensive benefits package.
Job Summary:
This posting is set to recruit two candidates for the Learning Center team.
Collaborates with Writing Center Coordinator and WR121Z/Q instructors to deliver embedded co-requisite support, facilitate group learning, and communicate student progress, while also reaching out to at-risk students. Develops and implements in-person writing workshops and creates digital content to enhance asynchronous learning and student access. Provides an essential link between the WR121Q students and support services in the college.
Essential Duties:
Collaborates closely with WR121/Q instructors to provide embedded academic support within co-requisite course sections. Assists with facilitation of group engagement, activity-based learning, and just-in time review in co-requisite WR courses. Maintains consistent and effective communication with instructors regarding student progress and learning needs.
Provides instructional support to students across all levels of writing by addressing specific questions related to writing assignments, writing process, and application of writing concepts. Develops instructional materials and learning aids to reinforce understanding and promote skill development.
Acts as the bridge between the classroom and academic support services at the college. Reaches out to underperforming or at-risk students in WR121Z/Q and collaborates with Writing Center Coordinator to coordinate student support. Informs students about Writing courses and Learning Center procedures.
Collaborates with Writing Center Coordinator and Writing Center Instructional Assistants to develop and implement WR121Q skills support workshops for in-person learning environments, create and maintain digital content to supplement workshops, support asynchronous learning, and enhance student access to instructional resources.
Collaborates with the Writing Center Coordinator to track relevant data related to co-requisite support services, including student attendance of workshops, usage of digital resources, and outcomes. Prepares and submits quarterly reports to the Learning Center Manager and provides additional reports as requested.
Collaborates with the Writing Center Coordinator to develop training materials around embedded writing support.
Continuously seek and integrate current trends and best practices in writing pedagogy and student support (learning assistance) through sustained professional development activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical Skills and Abilities: Learned physical skill is required to operate a computer keyboard or other office equipment. Must be able to read words and numbers. Must be able to communicate effectively and carry on routine conversations in person or over the phone.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a high activity instructional service area with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. Environment is busy with multiple background conversations occurring and requires multi-tasking with frequent interruptions and a focus on immediate response to a diversity of students needs. Considerable time is spent working at a computer.
Education and Experience
Position requires an AA/AS/AAT degree in English, Liberal Arts, or a related field, successful completion of WR121 with a B or higher, and two years of experience tutoring writing and/or assisting students in a writing classroom.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and Skills: Requires a broad knowledge of writing and the ability to shift rapidly between questions from widely different areas. Must have a working knowledge of instructional techniques and skills sufficient to instruct and tutor students on an informal level. Requires knowledge of subjects taught and strong communication skills to interact with a diverse population of students.
Abilities: Requires ability to help individual students or groups of students in or out of a classroom setting. Requires ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position. Requires the ability to model metacognitive and critical thinking skills. Must have demonstrated ability to understand and interpret staff instructions in order to assist students. Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of students and appropriately respond to those needs. Must have computing skills and knowledge sufficient to use application software and online resources. Requires experience using a range of software and online resources related to writing. Requires excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact on an informal level with students of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds and varying levels of ability. Must have strong planning, organizing and prioritizing skills.

Information Regarding the Salary Placement Process:
According to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between LBCC and the Independent Association of Classified Employees (IACE), all Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the positions grade. Placement at a higher step on the schedule is not negotiable, except by mutual written agreement of Association leadership and LBCC Human Resources. These exceptions are uncommon, and only granted in limited circumstances.
The Instructional Assistant 2 position is graded as a Grade 16 at a .85 FTE. Step 1 on the Classified salary schedule for this grade is $45,043 for a 218-day Fiscal Year appointment, prorated at .85 FTE. This position is assigned a 218-day annual work schedule, which includes 182 days at 8.0 hours per day and 36 days at 6.25 hours per day. During the designated summer period, the schedule transitions to 6.25 hours per day. Progression on the salary schedule is subject to the terms and conditions laid out in the IACE Collective Bargaining Agreement.
