Position Summary

The IRB Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, administrative management, and regulatory oversight of the Institutional Review Board at Morehouse School of Medicine. This role ensures the protection of human research participants and supports researchers by ensuring compliance with federal regulations, ethical standards, and institutional policies. The IRB Director also guides and educates faculty, staff, and IRB members on human subjects research compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversight and Compliance

  • Direct all IRB operations to ensure research projects comply with federal regulations (e.g., DHHS , FDA ) and institutional policies.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for the IRB to safeguard the rights and welfare of research participants.

  • Act as the institutional authority on ethical issues and regulatory compliance related to human subjects research.

  • IRB Management and Leadership

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the IRB office, including hiring, training, and managing IRB staff.

  • Plan and conduct regular IRB meetings, providing expert guidance on complex ethical and regulatory issues.

  • Oversee protocol reviews, modifications, and renewals, ensuring thorough and timely assessment of each project.

  • Policy Development and Implementation

  • Establish and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the IRB

  • Lead the development of institutional policies related to human research protections and compliance.

  • Training and Education

  • Provide training for faculty, researchers, staff, and IRB members on ethical and regulatory aspects of human research.

  • Develop educational materials and resources to promote best practices in research compliance.

  • Institutional Coordination

  • Collaborate with other institutional offices (e.g., Compliance, Research, Grants Administration) to integrate IRB activities into broader research infrastructure.

  • Serve as a liaison to regulatory agencies and external institutions to represent Morehouse's human subjects research program.

  • Records and Reporting

  • Oversee and maintain documentation and records for all IRB activities to ensure proper record-keeping and reporting

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Education: Master's degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., Public Health, Regulatory Affairs, Research Administration); Ph.D., MD, or JD preferred.

  • Experience: 5-7 years of experience in IRB management, human research protections, or related field in an academic or medical research setting.

  • Certification: Certified IRB Professional ( CIP ) preferred.

  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of federal regulations and ethical guidelines (e.g., 45 CFR 46, 21 CFR 50, 56, Belmont Report).

  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and organizational skills. Proficiency in regulatory software and databases.
