Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions)

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and University Center (Pos. # 89278), provides institutional research and technical support to Kauai Community College. This position works collaboratively with all members of the College community to enhance and accomplish the mission of the College.
  • *Plans and conducts various institutional research studies, activities, and analyses as they relate to planning, management, decision-making and evaluation of the College and its programs.
  • Designs and implements techniques to support annual and comprehensive program reviews and other evaluation measures.
  • *Provides institutional research support and analysis to assess and promote strategic initiatives, accreditation, enrollment management, and operational improvement.
  • *Conducts ongoing studies to evaluate such areas as student demography, enrollment trends, socio-economic factors, student learning outcomes, retention and graduation trends, transfer rates, and instructional and student services effectiveness to inform and support strategic planning.
  • Provides faculty and staff interpretation on use of data and/or analyses provided.
  • Applies analytical techniques to data analysis. Conducts research using quantitative statistical methods and software.
  • *Creates and maintains dashboards for data fluency, data presentations, storytelling, and visualization.
  • *Implements assessment methodologies, analyzes data, creates reports, and delivers findings in response to requests from campus administration, governance bodies and other constituencies.
  • *Works with staff and faculty in developing and implementing scientifically sound surveys for use in evaluating effectiveness of institutional programs, projects, and services.
  • Collaborate with faculty in effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
  • Design and implement effective assessment methodologies, including surveys and questionnaires, to support external grant development, and evaluate grant-funded activities and outcomes.
  • Develop expertise regarding institutional review board criteria and concerns.
  • *Collects, compiles, summarizes, and communicates data for reporting related to accreditation, campus, UH System, Legislative, State, and Extramural funding reports.
  • *Plans, designs, conducts, and organizes complex research studies, such as comparative analysis of teaching methodologies or recruitment/retention studies, in response to evaluation questions raised by the College and its administrators.
  • Works with faculty, staff, and administrators in developing proposals and applications for external funding.
  • Serves on appropriate college and UH System Committees.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Professional Work Experience

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in applied mathematics or statistics, data science, management information systems, data analytics, business intelligence, or related field and at least three (3) year(s) of progressively responsible experience in institutional research, data analysis, information systems, or a related analytical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, principles and practices of institutional research, data analysis, and higher education assessment.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with institutional research and data governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Considerable knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Experience using one or more programming or query languages, (e.g. SQL, Python, R, SAS, SPSS) to extract, manipulate, and analyze data.
  • Experience using data visualization software.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to apply complex methods and techniques of statistical analysis to a wide variety of research and assessment problems.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Masters degree in statistics, data analytics, or closely related field.
  • Experiences with data visualization tools, SQL, and relational databases.
  • Experience with current software supporting data collection, management, and analyses.
  • Experience in higher education and/or planning and research.
  • Strong analytical and research skills including critical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Experience working with University of Hawai'i student, course, and/or financial data.
